Critter problem any advice?

Worst case scenario, set a trap for a groundhog to help out a friend who discovered a hole in her yard and saw one running around. What did we catch? A skunk, and he is not too happy. Of course he/she already sprayed and it stinks. No the problem is what to do to dispose of the thing. We are in the city so no guns. Any ideas??

There is no animal control in Philly The SPCA is the closest to it, but as far as I know they don't handle skunks.

Cage match!   :)   Sorry.  No help here.  Maybe ask a vet?

Contact the USDA, (National Forrest Service) they may be of help.

Garbage bag + car exhaust.

Capture and release.  You did the capture part, now take it for a nice Sunday drive out in the boondocks and get rid of the evidence.

I forgot to close the havahart cage a couple of times at night and caught a skunk twice.  Skunks are active during the night so during the day they should be resting or sleeping.  The first one I caught I didn't notice till I got home from work and I walked up to the cage to see a skunk curled up under the door trying to stay in the shade.  I thought it was dead.  Then I noticed an ear twitch when a fly landed on it.  The one thing about those cages is you have to use two hands to open the door, so you have to be right there.  You can walk up to the cage with cardboard or an old blanket between you and the skunk and then cover the cage.  I open the door and slide a stick thru near the top of the door to hold it open and then walk away.  It worked for me twice.  The first time not even a squirt.  The second time the skunk waited until it got to the other side of the yard to let me know he could have given me something to remember him by.

He is out, released and back to his old haunts. Thanks for the advice. Next time I may try the garbage bag and car exhaust if I can get a long and wide enough hose. If it were a ground hog I would've taken it for a ride to the park, but not interested in fumigating my vehicle. lol

Using car exhaust is a humane euthanasia technique, but I would recommend using a box instead of a garbage bag.

Best way to catch a groundhog using a live trap is to place trap directly in front of burrow. Bait with cut up apple and/or sweet potato. It doesn't hurt to place a covering over the top and sides to make the entrance look like a tunnel. To increase trap odds you can also put a board on each side to funnel them in.

Hopefully you won't catch another skunk.

Good luck

I've caught dozens of groundhogs, bait of choice is broccolli, but I'm sure they would love your baits too. I guess the way to avoid catching a skunk is to close the trap door at night

I read in a handy man magazine that cantaloupe was good for groundhogs. The one time I tried it I had my perpetrator in under five minutes.

BLB, maybe the PA game commission would help out?

Didn't think skunk was considered game, lol. Of course they may have some suggestions, but this skunk is no longer my problem, he is free doing skunky things whatever that may be

If any of you ever get the honors of being sprayed by a skunk in the future I was told by someone that bathing in tomato juice could help clean the stink off.

Skunks are listed in many states as furbearers and have seasons and limits associatted with their harvest.

Rafed,
I used the tomato juice method on my dog once when it got sprayed.  It did knock the smell down, but you could still smell skunk on my dog for about a month.  This resulted in a drastic reduction in the amount of petting she got until the smell subsided.

Wow, skunks are actually hunted, that is kind of a shock to me. Learn something every day

Barry,

I can have a hat made out of skunk for you if you like.
We'll call you Daniel Boone

I think Mythbusters debunked the skunk stink/tomato thing.

No thanks Rafed, I'll pass. I think Daniel Boone wore a coon skin hat.

Yes the new de skunk mix is hydrogen peroxide, baking powder or soda and a little soap for spreading
