Crops on new rooted figs

this may sound like a dumb question. but cuttings rooted in nov that have been potted to 1 gal and have stron roots. if the tree grows 2-3 foot is it possible to get fruit. i know in most cases not recomended but is it possible to allow one to ripen, if one forms that is just to get a taste?

Sure if they have been growing since November, depending on the variety, if you get em plenty of sun and keep em watered all spring and summer some should try to set fruit. I would leave only one or two on the tree and expect the quality to be less than par of what a better size tree would make. The only problem is they'll set the fruit late, and they may not have time to ripen before that Illinois winter sets in, and the figgies do need their sleep. Good luck!

Many of the figs I started last year from cuttings, from March on, set fruits. At first I was picking the young fruits off as advised, but eventually let them set. Many ripened nicely and were very good, though many others did not because it was so late in the season. My plants were in full sun, growing well, and many had been moved up to 5 gallon pots. This year I'm going to let most fruits stay, but then here in SoCal, we have a long growing season.

as soon as temps allow they will be going in ground. my desert king trees i planted in ground last july - by september they were 3 foot. very fast growers. and this weather here is nuts. 15 one dat 65 the next cant make up its mind. the inground trees dont seem to have any damage and seem to be asleep. but whats up with the weather? never used to be like this.

Dave,
I was able to harvest figs from more than a dozen different plants that were about 6-8 months old last season. It depends on the fig variety.

Tony,
Improved Celeste, Tiger, Champagne and Eastern Brown turkey were some of the earliest, tasted one or two, pinched the rest.

Hey Pete what where the varieties that had fruit that fast I hope I have one just one of them.

It is not a disaster if you leave a couple of them to ripen. This past season I left one (the only one on the plant) and it ripened late September. The plant progressed like other rooted the same time. Even if there was some minimum slowing of growth the plant will catch up but it was more fun to watch it mature in our climate and taste the variety; Fig For Fun.

Tony, my LSU Purple started ripening main crop by the end of June last year.  The tasted OK, when the heat hit in July - that's what they needed.

Of course that was my in ground tree;)

The only LSU that im rooting actually growing in 32oz deli container is a gold LSU hope it does as good as your purple I have others rooting panache vdb 4 unknowns and a bunch at my dads in 1 gallon pots and cups. Oh yea im rooting dattato blue celeste and another unknown 2 node cutting.

Tony...I have some rooted LSU Purple cuttings from a generous Forum member, and I plan on keeping only one or two for myself.  If they survive until springtime I would be happy to send you one for your collection.  Please remind me in late April or early May, and we'll get it done. Ok?

i think one or two would be fine. but i knock them all off on the yr they were rooted. one the second yr, if the growth is not robust, i also knock them off. i mean... i want to grow these to get good figs. one or two year wait isn't so bad. besides, i have fig bearing age trees to meet my needs. from what i have read, if the tree put on too much energy into growing figs, they might not put on many figs following year, and they might also have an issue growing.

few trees that i have, other than Kathleen's Black, put on figs second year from rooting. the growth was great and they put on very lttle figs, so i let them keep them. on 3rd year, they put on good quality figs in good number. this is their 4th year and 3rd year putting on the figs. can't wait :) now KB.. i hope it's good this year. along with White Greek. i heard so many good things about White Greek, and it put on figs on second year. about 6 of 'em. they were great looking figs, but it was.. there was no taste what so ever.. like eating air with fig texture. i might move WG to bigger container this year to see if that helps.
