Cucumber breba

Well I think I know how this fig got it's name. Still not quite ripe, it's a little hard yet, but the skin is splitting. We had a lot of rain and that may be why. It's big! the biggest breba I have seen.

It sure ain't pretty! Any idea what part of the world it comes from?

LOL yeah it looks a little rough, but still looks good to me. Have no idea what part of the world it comes from. I was intrigued by the name when I saw it at Bill's Figs a couple years ago.

That's a first!  A fig-Japanese eggplant hybrid.  Did you use a wasp to get the cross to take?

You ought to kill it before it spreads!

BLB,

Any information on your "cucumber" ? Is it same/similar to melanzana, zucchini, Calabrese long? Thanks

FMD, As I mentioned previously, I really don't know a thing about it. I was captured by the name and took a chance when I purchased it. I don't grow the other varieties you mentioned above so have no frame of reference. A quick search on Jon's site revealed nothing other than an acsession number.

Frank, No wasp was involved, no cross with an eggplant, it's a cucumber fig just like the name.

It looks like my Longue d'Aout aka Melanzana Merdoscola aka Slocan. The brebas are huge.

Thanks Paully, I just got a Longue d'Aout recently, so in time I will be able to compare them.

Looks nuts Barry. I may stop by in the fall with clippers

You are welcome to do that Celt anytime. It is a novelty if nothing more. Hoping the taste is ok. Main crop was pretty good last year, but didn't look quite as unique

What about the leaves?

Nothing special but you know me, I can't identify much from leaves. I'll send you a pic tomorrow

Thanks barry

Barry,

I don't want to rain on your parade but that's one ugly fig!

Rafed, Didn't think there was such a thing as an ugly fig. Guess I am blinded by parental pride. I think it's size is impressive anyhow.

Barry,

LOL, just messing with you bro.
There is no such thing as an ugly fig;)

Rafed, I'm not that blinded, I know it won't win any beauty contests. And I know you want one, you know you want one too lol.

Now you just need a recipe for fig pickles....

Speaking of long figs, does anyone have a Berbera? PM me if you do and thanks.

Looks interesting. Since it splits in rainy weather, I wonder how it might do in Northwest? It's ugly but when it does ripen, maybe it might tast real good.

Barry,

Last night when you responded about me wanting one I was already in bed and the emails come directly to my iphone and I read it and started to laugh.

I have the Melanzana and Melanzana Merdascola and Longue D'Aout. The MM and Longue D'Aout are believed to be the same and yours looks almost identical.

So no, I don't want one,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,yet. LOL

Jennifer,

Yeah I think the rain may have influenced the split, but a lot of really good figs split along the skin like this too. It is not split as to expose the center of the fig so I am hoping if the birds leave it, I will have a decent fig snack either today or tomorrow. If you would like to try this ugly fig, just PM me in the fall, I'll be happy to send you some scion.

Nice- look forward to a hideous yet yummy potential fig- lol

Well here is the ugly fig cut open and then consumed. Slingha came for a visit and I shared it with him. Just ok, typical for a breba, main crop definitely is much better.

I have to admit I really wouldn't mind having one like that.
