cutting competition

About 2 months ago, after they showed some promising roots in a baggie, I potted a Strawberry Verte and a Golden Celeste together in a 1/2 gal container. I used some potting mix straight, no cups. I wanted to see what would happen.
Well, they grew a couple of tiny leaves first, stayed for about 2 weeks, then grew a little more and froze. The 'before' photo was taken on Apr.20th after I noticed more growing.
The SV appeared to be smaller and shorter, I was wondering how it would around the GC.

After 10 days the situation is totally reversed now! The SV took no prisoners, pushed the GC leaves to the side and exploded. I think if I stay and watch, I would see it growing! The GC is moving at a glacial speed, it seems.

Oh well, I thought they would become friends ...

You put a sumo wrestler in with Twiggy hahaha.

Are you going to pleach them?

Pleaching... Hmmm, that is a thought! Did not plan that though. Can you do that with figs?
Here is an interesting link

I forgot to mention, the sand on top deters the gnats almost entirely. It stays dry all the time. I have never seen any around this pot, unlike the cups with perlite mix.
If they are already in your potting mix, you need to deal with them first, but in my case the soil was clean and it stays like that (nock on wood).
While watering, the sand gets wet but drys up very quickly.
