I got a package last night I was not expecting. It is a Col de Dame cutting from UC Davis. Its about 18 in long with LOTS of nodes on it.

I had requested a Col de Dame cutting two years ago, but when it never came I forgot about it. But evidently they did not forget about me!

From everything I have read, this is a very exciting fig to acquire. My mouth is watering just reading descriptions of this fig.

The cutting is so nice and full of nodes I think I will try it as three separate cuttings to multiply my chance of a viable tree. Since the weather has turned nice here, I am putting them straight into black pots with sand in the yard, I had 75% strike rate with cuttings done this way last year. Wish me luck!

consider a chip graft or three if you have other fig trees at your disposal.  One bud per graft, so you wouldn't lose all that much of the cutting for the effort.

Can anyone tell me if the CdD is hard to root?

Gene mine rooted pretty easily. The one I rooted last year I cut into two. Both are very slow growers.

Here it is in the bottom right. I did get a fig off of it last year.

Good Luck Gene! I too, recieved a long Col de Dame, I cut into 3 pieces also. Used pure Coconut Coir, been having some good luck with this stuff lately. Hopefully, I can at least come up with one of them rooted, fingers crossed....Also, the best of Luck to all of our members here....: )

Best of luck with your cuttings....mine rooted pretty easily last year but didn't grow much.....I'm hoping they breakout this year....all my ucdavis cuttings were slow growers. My Cdd is the one in the white pot. The second picture is of cuttings started at the same time ...look at the growth difference.

John, it's really hard to see trees upside down.  LOL!  BUT, all UCD trees come infected with FMV which, in your zone, would make things tough.  They should grow out of it with age, but they might need more fertilizer and care.  In my zone, 9b, FMV is not a problem.  I do have FMV free trees, and they don't seem to catch the stuff, but my trees are spread over 1.5 acres and all in ground once they go dormant in a 3 gallon container.  IF they go dormant, which this year, nothing did.

Oops didn't. Realize they were upside down ....not sure why .....yep FMV definitely slows them down....hopefully they will do some growing this year

I find if I take pics with my iPad then edit them on the pc before uploading them, the orientation will be different if I am viewing on my iPad vs the pc.

I'm happy to say that I received my cuttings last Thursday and spent some time today playing with them.
I received one each of CdD B, Patisiere, and St. Rita. All 3 I was able to cut into 3 cuttings each
I also received a few Beall and Panachee. I was also cut out of the  Ischia and Madiera which I had hoped for.
I am grateful to all who are involved with this wonderful program.
