Cutting of Pastiliere and Sultane

Any chance of getting a cutting of Pastiliere or Sultane ?
Think these may do well in my area , but have been unable to locate any to buy .
Are they just too rare to be available yet ?

I've had Pastiliere on my "well, ok, ONE MORE" list since I got this obsession.  I just haven't had one drop in my lap yet.  It's one of the last varieties I'm going to be looking for (for now).

I think Pastillere is avail from UCDAVIS. Sultane is a bit harder to find. These both are supposed to do better in cold climates.

Hi Jose ,
That was my thinking , that these two could be good for my Zone 5 climate.
Zone 5 is as cold as I ever hope to get !
About UC Davis , I could order from there for next year , but I was hoping to find a cutting to start soon.

UCDavis cuttings from Herman says have FMV problems. You are going to have a hard time getting cuttings a spring approaches because most of us have our trees waking up.

My GH has all my trees leafing out.

I think Dalamtie, St John Grise might also be a colder variety fig also.

I hadn't heard much about Dalmatie or St.John Grise , but I'll look into them.
I know it is getting late and had no great expectations, but I thought I should ask. The more people I talk to up here in NH the more I see how interested they are in the idea of growing figs. If I can trial many varieties , the more I can pass on which seem to work well for me.
Spreading figs around , that is part of the fig bug's effect , from my experience of the fine folks on this forum.

My pastiliere is small and i dont have cuttings.
Stored in garage it did wonderful with no damage for a small plant,
last season it grew slow compared to others of mine same age and started to pick up a little bit as season grew older.
Time will tell with this one how it grows mind you i grow only in containers not inground . Its suppose to be early to ripe but again time will tell.

Jon/Encanto had Sultane early on(now sold out) and I've got the one cutting started. I'm looking for the Pastiliere too. I guess I'll try UC Davis next year too!

Hi Martin ,
Good to hear that it stored well as a small plant. I  appreciate your previous thumbs up on my planned storage area which stays between 20 F - 35 F over winter. I will only be growing in containers as well, except I might put one Florea in the ground based on Vasile's encouragement.
Have you tried Sultane or wanted to try it for this zone ?

Tim ,
What are you doing with that cold weather fig down there in Texas ?
Hope it does really well for you. Look forward to hearing how you like it.
I did order from Jon after he was already sold out of both the Sultane and the Sultane LD. Not sure of the difference between them.

Hi Drivewayfarmer,
I have heard of Sultane but at this time im not looking for it as there are a few others that have my interest and as time goes by and i taste some newer figs of mine and get rid of some as well i might consider Sultane in a few years perhaps not sure though.
I'm just getting more and more selective i suppose and looking for the richer tasting figs that might do well as opposed to sweet ones. I like a blend of taste and not the sweetness to overpower.
VdB so far seems to fit right in for me for good garage storage and rich taste. This season will let me know as plant will be 3 seasons old and if it tasted good last season in what i consider a rather lousy growing season it will be a keeper. Sorry if i veered off topic.

I'm looking too for them too.  So many figs.  So little time.

Hi Kerry, I'm hoping lots of those cold weather figs will do well in warmer weather too! I'm just testing some to see how they do in my climate---just like most of us. If it grows well, maybe I'll have a few cuttings to share next season. It's still in a cup, so I still have a long way to go.

Tim ,
Here's hoping your Sultane cup runneth over- with fig roots !

Does anyone know how to go about getting cuttings sent over of these two varieties or others if a friend happens to be in France this Autumn visiting  family ?  Is there an easy way to do it ?

The easy way is illegal (in your suitcase - if you put them in your underwear, they might be mistaken for a  bomb). The legal way is a pain, requiring a USDA Postentry Quarantine permit, quarantine area, state and or local supervision for 2-3 years, etc.If you are serious, I can send you the info.

Hey John ,
It is an older friend of mine who is going to France who I wouldn't want to impose on too much. She would like me to start a cutting of one particular fig she grew up eating in France and I think she may be considering just dropping a cutting in the mail from her hometown there. She will be there a few months and may be able to keep an eye out for Sultane and Pastiliere if she is willing. I'm leaving it totally up to her , but she really gets into descibing the figs she loved as a kid.
Thanks for the offer of info on the USDA process , but at this time it isn't something I want to or feel able to undertake.

Kerry

The other easy way is to have it shipped to you from France. For more assurance to have two split shipments a few days apart. Remember as it happened ?
It is for hobby only !

When I went to portugal in 2001 I brought 12 bottles of moonshine and they didnt open my luggage. My cousin has been bringing me fig cutting everytime she goes to portugal no problems yet, also had a fig tree sent from portugal without phyto and arrive alive 5 weeks later, maybe im just lucky.

So, it depends how lucky you are on that particular day on arrival with the cuttings. My neighbour coming from States did not declare a banana in his carry on luggage and was told to dump it in the container or peel it and eat the banana and drop only the peel in the confiscating container!

Nelson ,
I'll leave it up to my friend , but maybe she could put cuttings between the champagne bottles she is likely to return with.
Ottawan ,
I'll tell her not to pack it with the bananas and maybe she'll get by.
Or maybe it won't interest her to try even mailing them.
I'll see what she decides.

I dont advocate illegal things But if it were ME going i would buy the plant cut it up and ship priority mail and chance it. The rest would be  planted somewhere by a local government office or police station at night with a little anonomiss love letter attached.
You can bet your rooting toottin fig sticks thats what i would do if i were me oversea's .

The bare rooted rest could be mailed to you in a separate box. No need for a charity tree!
