Cuttings

Over the last few months, I've spoken with my Mom several times about getting some cutting from the family tree when it gets pruned - the tree was pruned but I never received any cuttings.

She lives in NY, and I know the tree is growing.  Is it too late to get a cutting or 2?  I've asked her about a sucker - but she really doesn't know what I'm talking about - love her anyway :)

I am a bit disappointed.  I guess "out of sight, out of mind" is the way most people (even - especially family) go through life.

I will speak to her this weekend and I'm pretty sure ( I know that's dangerous thinking! ) I could get her to cut a few this weekend and send them out on Tuesday.

Thanks and looking forward to reading the replies!

Hi Jo-ann have you ever considered an airlayer ?? no rooting cuttings etc

its not a fig in the video but its done exactly the same way

way i see it, cutting is never late. if it doesn't grow enough by the time winter rolls around.. just have to keep it indoor.

Agree with Pete - see if you can get your mom to send you some now. And if they don't take, the tree will be very generous and provide more.

If your mom is older, try not to take it personally that she forgets or doesn't take figs as seriously - you'll just have to keep reminding her.

JoAnn,
you may want to ask Mom if she see's any small plants around base of tree .
If so maybe some younger family member unless of course Mom is able to can go with small garden shovel and knife and get one with roots.

I have done this in past in a container when a branch grew from main trunk under soil and peaked back out and under soil it had roots and was severed and potted into a plant.

JoAnn - Over the past fews years, I've always taken cuttings in late May, and started them outdoors...see this thread:

Go for it!
Joe

Yes she is older - Yikes!  that means I'm older too!  She is not ill, disabled or feeble in mind or body by any stretch of the imagination.  I think we have good genes in that regard - her mother died 3 years ago at 100 years old!  Admittedly the last 5 weren't that great, but the first 95 were!

Tony - I'm in Tx, she's on LI, about 15 miles from you, so me doing an air layer is not possible and that would be too much to ask of her.

Martin - Younger family near!!  Yeah - brother (separated) and sister (with family) under the same roof with with Mom - but that's another story.  I've explained about smaller plants growing from the ground around the base of the tree, I'm not sure if she understood what I meant.

Pete and Gina - She LOVES figs, she never had to take care of the tree (I got that from her when I was  kid lol)  I'm hoping this will inspire her and maybe she will either try to "make" a few more from her tree or maybe I'll send her another type.

Joe - Just one question (well maybe more), do you remove the current leaf growth?  I would think so as not to stress the cutting by having to support a leaf without having a root system.

It was only about 25 years ago or so we heard of "white" figs.  We just had our tree from my fathers father and that's all we knew.  Boy have times changed!

I'll also ask her to try and get a cutting from a cousins tree a few doors down from her - she said they had so many figs last year they didn't know what to do with them!  I wouldn't mind that problem!!  I'll tell her to plant one or 2 for herself also!

Jo-Ann just gonna throw it out there if you want me to do the air layer for you at her house she can send it to you once it is done i will go there set it all up and she can keep an eye on it and when its ready cut and send its up to you im actually going to manhasset to show someone on craigslist in trade for a tree and im going to levitown to show a typical 94 yr old ginne how to do it he was offering me cuttings on craigslist and  got to talking with him and he said wow you gotta show me that so thats my story if i can be of any help please let me know
