cuttings

Hi and brand new to this great forum. Such a wealth of great info. I live on Long Island and have purchased a few varieties (chicago hardy and tukey) and even got a few figs last fall. I should say the local squirels got a few few figs but that is ok. I have had no luck in gettings cuttings to root and wondering if any members have hardy interesting fig variety cuttings for sale? Thanks very much

Welcome to the forum.

I am not sure what you are trying to accomplish, you have not had good luck in getting cuttings to root and you are looking for more cuttings?  There are some cuttings that are easier to root than others and in my case some are down right impossible for me, Panachee, Danny's Delight, and others.  I would suggest that you do some research by using the search function and see what has worked for others and also there may be some members close to you that would probably help.  Do yourself a favor, look around your neighborhood and find a fig tree as a source for local cuttings and save your money until you have learned a little more.

OR, Email me your address and I will send you a bunch of cuttings to practice with.

Read the page at this link, then read the alternate method link at the top.  It will help you a lot.  Get the coarsest perlite you can and rinse or sieve the fine particles out.

Rc. ,were, can i buy coarse perlite. I bought fig trees, from jon and they had huge pealite in them. At least 1/4 inch and bigger. Hard stuff to get down here. No one has it. Even the big nurseries dont have a clue. They have the small stuff. I guess i dont have to have it but would like to get a bag.

Richard, do a search for a hydroponics supply store in your area. They're bound to have horticultural perlite - the bigger nuggets.
It's also a lot cheaper than the stuff you get at Lowes or Home Depot.
A huge bag runs around $20.

Thank you. they have a hydroponics store i never been to. Wal mart and lowes has the little bags. They may have coir and vitamino that i am low on. Good idea

Very nice of you Danny!!
Bjli, I do the wet moss in a box or baggie with a touch of clonex on a little scape.
Good luck
Mario

We need a rating scale on difficulty of rooting a fig. For me also Panache was a hard one to root also.....I guess that's why they are rare.  The common one Mission and Kadota are great tasting fig and easy to root.

I wouldn't say Panachee is rare, they are just more suitable for the Southern states. Every nursery around LA sells them ( as well as Jon).

Fig pig the hydroponics store will likely have high quality course perlite you won't need to screen (unlike big box stores). I've used Foxfarms Big and Chunky for a couple seasons now and love the results.

Thanks guys. I found a hydroponics store 16 miles from house. Going tomarrow. They probably going to have,a bunch of toys i will want there to. Lights!!

Welcome to the forum bgli, I think your thread has been semi-hijacked. Right now is a good time to keep up with the great offers that members have been posting. You will find their offers are very generous, sometimes free cuttings and pay only for postage. Hope more members will offer their welcomes.

Speaking of free cuttings there is a post right now with free cuttings.

I don't know what part of L.I. you are from but I go to griffin greenhouse supplies in Brookhaven off of montauk highway.  Good stuff at good prices.  PM me what cutting varieties you are looking for and I will see if I have it.

I live very in a very rural area. Shopping sucks to put it mildly. I have bought vermiculite on ebay, a very large bag. I should do that with perlite but have not done so yet.
I have found info here very helpful in rooting. I use a clear 18 gallon Sterlite containers as little green houses. They are fairly cheap and available. I know I am not the only one who does this ether. I hope this helps some.

Thanks all for the great information and special thanks to those generously offering cuttings!
