Cuttings and Water Temp

I've been thinking about some people saying the cuttings die after they cup them.  Some of mine have been in cups for about a week and they are thriving - no gnats either!!  I haven't watered them since, but I did use tepid water instead of cold from  the faucet.  I'm thinking that may have something to do with it - pouring water that is 15-20 colder then room temp would shock me!! What about the little roots?

That's what I've been doing.

i think i remember an old article somewhere that plants like room temp water. forgot why. but i give my outside faucet water. not sure what the temp is. if they don't like my water, they can go find it somewhere else.

i think rain water is great and let it get to room temp.

Nice pete.

i use cold water from the tap. i water from the bottem, dont know if it matters. just figured if the surface is dry then might not get nats. had a few but not to many and all mine are thriving. just potted a few up to 1 gal size.

Maybe next week, I should try giving them snow..

Dunno if I'm serious though. Just a thought

Melt the snow its like rain water.
Its probably good for them.

Jen, do you mean on your cuttings inside!?

Yes Jo-Ann, using cold water slows down growth and limits the amount of water that the plant will then use and therefore the pot will stay wet longer. I help take care of an orchid collection and when I was hired I insisted that we stop using cold well water (it was softened too!) and switch to room temperature rainwater. The orchids responded quite well.

Thanks for confirming Brent - I knew I was on t something!

If you wick water the figs you never have to worry about it.
