Cuttings - Antigone's Mystery Fig

Hi everyone. So after getting lightly chided for attempting to throw away the prunings from my tree, I decided I would get cuttings for anyone that wants some. Right now I'm only asking that you pay shipping and I'll send 4 or 5. The easiest for me is to send you (within the USA) a USPS flat rate padded envelope. The cost is $6.10 and this method comes with a tracking number that I will send you. If you want a different method of shipping (or are outside of the USA) then the price will change accordingly.

I do not know what sort of tree I have but if you want to take a stab at guessing you may go here:

http://figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post/cuttings-available-pruning-is-tough-work-eta-photos-of-the-fruit-7793580?pid=1289880403

and see all of the photos I posted and a decription of the taste.

Now for the help I'm asking for. This is the first time that I've ever done cuttings and I want to make sure I'm sending folks what they want. A lot of my cuttings look great (at least as thick as a pencil, many nodes, and bud at the tip) but some are a little wonky. More new wood than old wood, multiple branches, or obtuse curves. I also have about 5-6 cuttings with cute, tiny figs on them. Is this desirable or should I just pluck them off before shipping? I'm posting a bunch of numbered photos and please comment with the number of the cutting that you would not be thrilled to receive.

Thanks for the help!

Cheers,

Amber

Hi Amber.
All the cuttings will work, 1 through 8 people can cut them and get two cuttings out of one.
Thank you for taking the time to do this!!
Vito

They are very nice. # 2 is a Little thin but would root. They best one that i would like to receive is # 12 ;))

They look good to me Amber!! Very nice of you to take the time to do this!!

Best Wishes,

Frank from Bama

Thanks for the help and encouragement all! I will be sending out some tomorrow. Maybe I'll make a Christmas wreath with the rest.

Umm, in case there are any late comers that want some, how do I keep the cuttings healthy for about a week or so?

Put the rest of them in a plastic bag with a damp paper towel and put them in the fridge.
They will last a year.
Vito

Thanks, again for doing this.  When I see this sort of niceness, it really feels great.  It makes me want to do more for others.  Sort of like "Pay it Forward."  Has anyone seen that movie?  Anyway, Amber, I am going to name my tree after you!  It will be my Amber tree :-D  Please do post pictures of your wreath when it's done.  I love being inspired.

That's so sweet of you. I have to admit that I'm excited that somebody who I send my cuttings to might finally identify my mystery tree! And I'm going to work really hard this winter to get rid of the rust so I might share pictures to the forum of her in all her glory.

All of your cuttings are great but you should pluck the figs off.  You'll have to make up a name like Amber's Unknown so we can talk about it.  If someone gets a positive ID we can go with that, later.

If you store them in the fridge check them for mold or condensation.  A lot of people will put them in with a piece of dry long fibered sphagnum moss to absorb any excess moisture.  That decreases the risk of mold.

Already sent unfortunately so they do have little figgies attached still. But I will do what you said for the fridge. Thanks so much for the tip. Does it have to be my name or can I call it something romance novel-y like "Antigone's Secret"?

LOL, it can be anything you want!  The purists like you to keep the word, "unknown" in the name but I feel that if anyone wants to know more they can research the name and get the back story.  You will save yourself some angry messages if you use "unknown" as part of the title.  I suppose you could use, "mystery" and that would serve the same purpose while sticking closer to your theme.  Maybe Antigone's Mystery Fig?

It's totally up to you.  Be creative!

I like that- "Antigone's Mystery Fig". I wanted to give her a strong name and since they aren't really my figs, they are hers, I want her to get the credit lol. So what do I do? Should I edit my posts with the name and message the people I sent cuttings to?

You can update your threads but PMing everyone is probably too much work.  If you're going to PM then anyway by all means mention it.

How does one edit a topic title?  I haven't figured that one out?

Thanks!

I'm on my samsung phone but it's just at the bottom of my original posting before the comments start. "Edit". Not sure if it's the same for iPhone or computers though.

Thanks, Amber.  I've been on my PC trying to figure it out.  I'll check my Iphone.

On a desktop go to the first post in the thread, hit edit and then click on advanced editor or go advanced.  Then the title will be in a text box and you can edit it.

Thank you, Rcantor!

Firstly, don't count on me to identify these things.I'm as noob as it gets. I've only eaten 1.25fig (s?) In my life, unless you count fig newtons...which don't count bci didn't swallow, yuk. And a dried fig, which I also spit out bc yuk.

Secondly, public THANK YOU! You didn't have to do this, and I appreciate it. I know I'm going to screw up, so it's helpful to have met than a few cuttings to grow.
