Cuttings Available

Hello Everyone,

I have cuttings I will make available to members for what I think is a reasonable price. My 60 year old fig tree I have been calling a Desert King (not positive since joining the forum) needed a little haircut, so this year I removed high branches where the figs are unreachable.

Packages have a combination of tip cuttings and non-tip cuttings.

Description:

  • Large, bright  green skin
  • Strawberry - red pulp
  • Very sweet, excellent tasting fig. The quality and flavor varies year by year.  I would describe last year’s crop to have a hint of melon
  • Cold hardy
  • Grows well in the Pacific Northwest’s cooler climate and typical short season here
  • One huge Breba crop in August
  •

Pictures attached

It's good that you have pictures of the tree and the fruit of the cuttings you are selling.

Btw those are some pretty awesome figs you have there. Same for that tree.

Wow, nice tree and huge figs. Good deal for a lot of members.

Wow what a tree. I didn't know that DK fruit got that big. I have a 3 year old tree and hope to get figs this year. The cuttings will not last long.

Wow, what an awesome looking tree and great-looking cuttings & generous offer.

I guess I can be the forth person in a row to say "WOW" Shirley. What an absolutely awesome tree. You must be very proud of that fella.
Excellent offer, who can resist those beautiful cuttings.
Good Luck with your 2015 cuttings :)

Nice!

The fruit description, fruiting habit and leaves all look like DK so I'd say that's a pretty solid ID.  Great offer!

awesome looking figs, beautiful tree :)
too bad I have 2 of 'em growing already.
great deal Shirley.

Thank you.

Beautiful pictures of you tree and it's incredible bounty, Shirley.
Thanks for sharing!

I agree with the obvious, that is a beauty and very healthy looking. I got a DK from Wellspring this last fall, but if turns out to be non-productive I will be looking up this thread and sending you an email in a couple years to try get some cuttings then. Thank you for offering these to everyone, that is a great deal.

Very nice, Shirley!  I can see a lot of love & work goes into maintaining that tree!

I will add my "Wow!" to those figs and great looking cuttings!

I wish I didn't have that variety already. Yours is outstanding!

Let me add my WOW as well. Amazing tree!!! Do you have a bucket truck to harvest the tops?

Shirley, that's an outstanding specimen of Desert King. Looks like it is 12 to 15 high?

After looking at the great pictures, it brings to mind two question.

I notice that you only had 117 cooling degree days, in 2011. Do you recall how the fruit tasted in 2011.

Seeing a CDD number that low, is going to stop be from me complaining about the cool summers we have in New England.

Also, looking at the  picture of the cuttings, they look like they have been either dipped in wax, or sprayed with dormant oil. I was wondering which?

Bob

Thanks everyone,

This tree is what started my fig addiction and that of many other people.  My fig loving friends named it "The Magic Fig Tree"  and we have called it that ever since.

It's 60 years old.

I would guess it is about 20ft in the picture.  The greenhouse next to it is 10.

Bob -  We did have a year I was dissapointed in the number of figs.  I normally have them coming out of my ears, but that wasn't the case one recent  year.   I did not share many figs that year. I still had quite a few, but they weren't quite as rich in flavor as usual.  I believe it may have been 2011.

No, the cutting were not dipped in wax or sprayed with dormant oil.  They were still wet from a wash and scrub.

Packages have been mailed.

Once again, thank you for requesting cutting from my Desert King.  I hope they live up to what I expect of them.  Happy fig growing.

If I missed anyone please speak up.  It can be challenging to juggle everthing.
Please let me know that you receive them.

I still have cuttings if anyone else is interested.

Thank you Shirley, once again a great offer

Shirley, That is one majestic tree. I have strated developing special respect to Flora, especially the tall standing trees that have weathered all along, passing the test in time and yet stay tall and majestic. What would humans do?

Great pictures and very generous offer.

Thanks, Shirley. Cuttings came today. They are some really nice "node-y" cuttings. Very generous.

Shirley, got my cuttings today. Thanks a lot. Appreciate the extras as well.

Hi Shirley
Got mine today. Very nice, I always look forward to growing a fig I've never grown before
and always wanted
Thanks
