Hi,Merry Christmas!I just checked my cuttings in the fridge and the insides of the bags were somewhat wet, no mold, but some sticks had ice on them. I wiped out the bags, patted dry the sticks and put them inside another bag. I trimmed one stick and it seemed still alive, rimmed with green. Should I let these go, thinking they're ok? Try to start them/some now to see if they're still viable? Thanks.Arne
good question,,,,,,,,,,,,
They actually are a lot hardier than we think especially when they are fully dormant. ! Do not panic and change the spot in the fridge along with upping the temp a bit! Good luck:)
It sounds like you're good to go! It's a good sign if you cut them and the cambium is still greenish. I had the same thing happen to me; I put some Celeste and Filacciano cuttings in the fridge. I come back two months later and they had ice on them and some of the ends were black and heavily damaged. I thought they were dead (some green cuttings were definately dead), but I tried rooting the fully dormant ones anyway...and what do ya know, they all rooted!
I've taken cuttings from (outside) plants well after freezing weather set in, and they rooted fine, so I don't think you have anything to be concerned about.
Just make sure you dry them off well before they go back into the frigelator. You probably have more to worry about with rot from water in direct contact with the cuttings than from the ice!Last winter I put a little bit of shredded dried sphagnum moss in with my cuttings just to soak up any excess condensation. It seems to have helped with that problem.Jim
I have never stored cuttings more than a month. Seems like they would dry out and die but i know they dont from what i learned here. They can be stored for a year. Is this correct? Thanks richie
I wonder the same thing. I was told when i bought my 258 cuttings to leave them in the figgerator for 10 days. I made 7 days. And this morning i have small leaf growth. Isnt that a good feeing when you see your prised cutting making its first signs of life!!!
I could not agree more, several of mine (nowhere near 258) now have buds swelling and a couple with leaves breaking. The next generation of clones is rising! !!
I just put 8 one year old cuttings from 2 varitites into the humidity chamber and all of them opened buds within a week.
Rich, why did you store them for so long?
Aren't cuttings like jello? There always room for more?
I find it amazing how a cutting is like a seed stored energy. The white center keeps them ready for life.
Hi some of you probably know that i am not good on rooting, but i have a question.i sold a cutting to a person that started rooting it.with in 8 days there were no roots, no leafs, but there was a fruit that came out of nowere and just would not stop growing.has that ever happened to anyone here?
It happens frequently. They needed to remove the fig and any more that form, the figs will zap all the energy from the cutting and cause it to fail.
thank you Scott
No worries Andreas.
I started mine last night andreas let you know when somthing happens
