This is the fastest I have even seen a cutting root. This is a Desert King cutting placed in its cup on 8/23. These pics were taken today, 8/31. My success rate in rooting in cups is about 80%, completely burying the cutting is about 25% and water rooting about 50%. The last one shows the big fat root that is visible, I am sure there are more hidden. The DK home under LED lights.Normally it is a month or longer to see a root in these cups. Small tip cutting are started in peat pots until roots pop through. This Texas Everbearing was started in a cup on 5/19, 8/31 pic shows 9 inches tall and this guy will go outside today.
Looks great! Wish you continued success with them!I've had great results with DK cuttings also. I have a few on my screened in back porch now. I have them in clear plastic cups sitting in a big plastic toter and I keep the lid open during the day and closed at night. 2 were already showing roots at about 10 days. I have a few other varieties I'm trying to start right now and many are not even showing root initials yet (I got impatient and dug up a few...) after 3 weeks. Here's one of the DK's after 3 weeks...
I was surprised at how quickly the DK and one of those super special "unknowns" in this case a "Yellow from Louisiana" rooted. Looks like I will have lots of small trees next spring for trade/sale!
Great results, it appears you have it down pat. Congratulations!
Great job. Are those special led bulbs that you used?
No special bulbs......on sale Lowes 40 Watt equivalent. Averaged about $1.50 a bulb. Dirt cheap to run and build. Tried the red/blue "grow lights" and besides a high failure rate the did nothing the normal bulbs did not do. It seems everyone has a system of rooting that works for them. Killed lots of cuttings trying to figure it out for my situation. What works in my warm humid TN area would not have worked as well when I was in AZ. On the other hand I now have lots of "unknown" trees as the cuttings were cheap to experiment with. At least I feel comfortable now buying some expensive cuttings to root. BTW, I have a long post on here somewhere on the lights/stands and such.
