Cuttings: What to Do..????

Its getting closer to that time for pruning and I have many thoughts on my mind.  I had bad luck last year with gnats and the wrong potting mix and the varying temps of rooting cuttings indoors.  I plan to seek cuttings and try grafting this fall, hopefully I will be successful. On rooting Cuttings, I am thinking about just putting them in the refrigerator and start them in early spring. Can the cuttings last that long from October to March...????

cutting can stay in the fridge for up to a year and still root. as for rooting the cuttings at first i wasnt any good at it but i found i was trying to hard and was impatent. i have found that figs root very well for me when i score the cutting and apply a rooting harmone such as clonex or dip and grow. i have some grow lights set up in the bathroom the heat and humidity from shower seem to help along with a space heater in my zone 6 winters. as for gnats ebay has organic bti for cheep and workes great. hope this helps dont give up.

Armando i never left cuttings in the fridge , but Aharons method of keeping them 1 year looks attractive, it changes the whole picture since i can take cuttings anytime and ship them to friends etc in that period.

I have a question which is a bit related
If i took cuttings and left them for 2 days in my car without any humidity but closed in a bag ( i was busy with work -sorry fig gods)  - wil they survive?
now after a week they still have green bark when i score them but no roots still.

Yes.  I've left cuttings on my garage floor over the winter without any bags and they were still viable months later.  I wouldn't do this with prized varieties, but just to give you an idea of how strong a cutting can be.

GNATROL WDG Organic BTI on ebay works.

Thanks Everyone for your response, it is appreciated........... I kind of thought, the putting the cuttings in the fridge was a myth or exaggeration. Cuttings seem to have a will to survive. Before I throw something away, I check to see if it is officially dead.

October seems too early to remove cuttings. Plants may have die backs and you will end up without those 'year growth' needed for brebas. Best to prune in late winter, early spring, when tree is just awaking up.   those cuttings will be healthy and viable full of life to regrow new trees.

I am not planning on pruning in the fall. I am working on grafting projects, so I am clipping off a small branch to graft onto other trees. I lost some good ones and want a back-up. Losing my Unk.Pastilliere, Zingerella, Jarupa, Alma etc. was an eye opener. Lost them to RKN, Heat, Under & Over watering, don't want to take any responsibility...LOL

Hi Armando93223,
I would put the cuttings on hold fully buried in a pot of compost outside in a shady spot.
For instance in an 80 liters trashcan, grouping the cuttings in the middle with compost separating them .
Gnats need heat, and if you keep the trashcan cool outside ( In my zone7 ... it is easy), gnats won't be able to develop and the cuttings won't move until they expose them to light and heat .
The compost will hold just the right moisture for cuttings not to desiccate. You could keep them in the fridge ... But where are ya gonna put the beer then ? In the compost ? :P
The choice is yours !

Thanks JDSFrance,....... will be looking on Ebay for low cost cuttings for my grafting experiments and try to root any of the extras.

Armando im near you send me your address I can send you some cuttings.
