Daisy's "Cornilio" unknown Brown Turkey

Fig fever running crazy in AZ!  Brown Turkey "Cornilio" unknown cuttings to share.

IMG_0519.JPG

I spent a hard working afternoon yesterday helping my Bolivian friend Daisy from Cottonwood AZ zone 8, trim her 9 year old Brown Turkey that she calls "Cornilio" after her father.  The fruit of this fig tree is how I met Daisy and renewed my own passion for the fig.  I have shared the forum with Daisy and she is fascinated by all the different varieties and information that has been contributed by the members.  We were inspired by Frankallen's post about the merits of the Brown Turkey. That has been her experience with this variety. We were talking about Frank's post and the fact that she used to put trash cans full of cuttings from this tree in the compost pile or to burn in the fires every winter.  This year she would like to share the cuttings with the members here, thereby including her favorite fig in the figgy mix. This tree is so prolific that Daisy takes 2 large ice chests full of figs to 3 different farmer's markets each week all summer. Many of the figs are as big as my hand (see pics in additional posts) and all have had exceptional flavor. People line up at the markets for the figs as she always sells out.  The tree is still covered in unripe figs as we did have a freeze.  Looking forward to the member's comments and sharing this beauty with you all. Thank you again for all the wonderful community sharing the inspiration, fun and health that these amazing plants bring into our lives.  Jodi and Daisy

Hey Jodi!  I sent you a PM.  That's a beautiful tree!  I love the white bark on it!  It's looks very healthy!  Does she fertilize it at all?  Any other maintence work on it?  I'm just curious.

thanks for posting!

Yes, It is really amazing. She has it incased in a concrete bumper to keep it out of the walkway and neighbor's yard. She has a "secret" for feeding it. We are discussing sharing that . Little by little she shares her Bolivian magic with me. Happy to send you offspring of this magic tree. Best, Jodi

Looks amazing!  Can you send some of your AZ climate out with the cuttings?  ;)

Does she know the origin of her Brown Turkey tree?

Hey, Jodi and Daisy !  That sure is a beautiful Fig Tree! I'm like Dennis, the white trunks are beautiful! Love the large size of the Figs.

Please let us know when you could have cuttings available and the cost and shipping.  I'm pretty sure members here would be very interested, me Included...: )

Thanks, for the nice Photos and posting them.

Frank

We are honored to be a part of the community Frank. We just want to share them covering the cost of mailing. I'm checking on the postage, packaging $$ today. Do you have suggestions/preference on the way the cuttings are prepped for shipping? Saran Wrap, bare, etc? And what is the largest useful size diameter of cuttings? Quantity, 3 cuttings with 3-4 nodes best? We cut a ton off the tree yesterday and should be able to ship them to members next week. It has been a wonderful experience. And I'm getting little tidbits out of Daisy each day about her Fig whispering! ;-)

'
Jodi,
Most people use "Priory Mail at the P.O. they will even furnish the little boxes to ship them in and I think it's around $6.00...Most  people send cuttings that are usually 6-8" long and about the size of a pencil maybe a little bit larger with 3 nodes or more. Hope this helps Jodi, maybe some of the other members will add to what I just wrote. Oh yea, you can use Saran Wrap or Ziplock bags... Thanks so much! ; )

Hi Jodi & Daisy,

Thank you for sharing, PM sent!

Beautiful tree with impressive fruit.  Thanks for posting.  PM sent.

Thank you for sharing,PM sent

Omg it's a beautiful tree.

Thank you everyone for honoring Daisy and her beautiful tree. We are finishing amassing the cuttings and checking on postage and packaging. Our first choice would be to 1. trade for anyone's favorite fig or 2. any on Jodi's wish list or 3. cover postage and handling $11. Based on what I see here on the forum, 3 cuttings, 3 nodes ea. We should be able to get them out next week. PM for Paypal and address exchange. This is so cool!!! Figs reconnect the world! Yeh!

PS I'm still working on understanding how she tends all her plants. I have to keep reassuring her that you are all not going to show up at "her" farmer's markets with figs uf she shares the tree and her methods! ;-) So cute! I know she puts the cleanings from the chicken coop and egg shells under the trees. I'm learning.

Thanks so much Jodi and Daisy for sharing this beautiful tree with us! I want some cuttings too! Sent you a PM...Thanks Y'all...: )

Frank

Hi, Jodi: beautiful tree!! Would love to hear more about its origin.

Thx
Meg

Update on Daisy's fig.  We have been so honored by all the requests for cuttings and the generous offerings of cuttings from member's personal favorite trees in trade.  We have been busy trimming this giant and are wondering what diameter cutting is too big for rooting?  We are so excited that so many members have asked for cutting from this lovely, fruitful tree.  There are still bounties of fresh cuttings for anyone else that is interested.  Daisy says she likes to think her father's namesake tree is going out all over the world.  Very cool.  I am also posting a few more pics from this summer on the Cornilio unknown BT.  The picture of the fig filling my hand above was taken on 7-23 so the breba crop?  This one was taken on 9-23. Happy Figging all.   IMG_0515.JPG

Usual cuttings range from pencil size to probably an inch diameter.  I personally like them to be 1/2 to 3/4 inch diameter.  There are a few threads of people rooting big cuttings like over an inch to two inches in diameter.

Thanks Charlie. I wasn't sure about the bigger end of the range. I have been surprised in my limited rooting experiments that the green, thin pencil cuttings don't do as well as the fat cigars, as I call them. Good to know as we work on all these cuttings. We have quite a bounty of great looking cuttings. Some of the thicker pieces really have a lot of nodes so close together. They look like knuckles. Cuttings shipping next week for those that have requested w a PM. Listening to Daisy talk about the origin of the tree and her methods to keep this papa tree so happy. Keep posted for more of the stories. ;-)

Okay, well I'll bite. Will send pm for cuttings. Was just up in Cottonwood to take the Verde Valley train ride on November 21. Looks like good fig-growing country

That's an awesome color Jodi. I have a smal BT tree given to me by a guy in New Mexico. The figs look just like the one in your photo. I like the dark purple color. Does the figs crack when ripe? Or do they just droop? Any photos of the interior?

I do Dennis. One more closeup. I'll post it tonite. The first figs were the big fat "peaches" you see in the picture of it filling my hand, lighter in color. They got much darker and a little smaller over the course of the summer. Some drooped, some cracked although not a dry crack like I see on some of the pics (Preto), and many have the resin at the eye. I keep asking Daisy about where the tree came from and she had several trees that did not make it, so she is a little confused about which one of them it was and therefor where it came from. Trying to assertain that still. We may never know for sure.

Awesome looking tree and fig. Do you have a picture of the fig interior.

Jodi you need a picture of the whole fruit not just eye. Cut in half and put a quarter next to it for reference. Place a few sample leafs next to each other which are older marure leaves.
