Dalmatie ?

About 4 minutes in to the first of two recent videos posted by Michal , Two New Videos on Fig Cultivation in Austria , apnoist mentions the name of a fig.
I think he was saying that Dalmatie was a variety worth trying in the cooler parts of North America .
Anyone growing this fig have any input on how they like it and how it is doing here ?
Is there more than one version of Dalmatie ?
Thanks ,

Dalmatie is a very pretty fig and has leafs very similiar to that of brunswick. As far as I know there is only one variety.

If you live in a rain abundant climate make sure it is not Brunswick or you will regtret later,by getting a million Vinager flys populating your garden and souring your good cultivars that otherwise will not sour.
If you live in Israel like climate it soesn't matter,it will be your best fig!!

Jose ,
If you have tasted the fruit , how much did you like it ?
Supposed to be a slow grower , have you found that to be the case?
Would you recommend trying it in NH?

See Dalmatie Don't think it is a Brunswick.

@Pitan I never said it was Brunswick. I said the leafs on mine looks close. My tree is small and the leaves are long lobed.

@ Henry, yes you are right about Brunswick. It may not produce very well in other spots but in our HOT DRY southwest, it works ok.

@Drivewayfarmer: My dalmatie is very small, hoping it will give next year.

Herman ,
I appreciate your warning about Brunswick.

I have a small Dalmatie I just got this year, no figs yet so cant really input on how well it performs in my zone. I took these pics over a month ago its only grown about 6 inches so far since april.

Jose do your leaves look similar to this??

Nelson ,
We really need to find you a farm near Toronto for your all your figs and your green thumb.
Looking forward to hearing how Dalmatie does for you in the future.

Nelson, yes, a bit finner lobbed, but looks pretty close to yours.

Kerry some land will be a dream come true, I checked on the Dalmatie today there were 5 tiny figs on the tree but i picked them off they would never ripen in time.

Jose I agree newer leaves are finer lobed will try to take pics this weekend.

Hello,
Dalmatie is one and only variety.
In Europe you can find also Precoce de Dalmatie, but it is more promotion than reality.
Dalmatie is in any case an early cropper. 2 crops.
The similarities to Brunswick are that both have very big fruit and deep cut lobes. But, Dalmatie is resistant to rainy and cold weather, it does not split or sour. It is green outside, strong red inside, it has a very good flavor, together with the trees habit - small, it is a perfect fig, if there is not much space in the garden.
Here in zone 7 with warm, sometimes rainy summers and cold to very cold winters, Dalmatia, Ronda de Bordeaux and Pastille are maybe the best choice.
If I repeat myself too often, forgive me:)
Mike

Mike ,
Thanks for confirming that I heard correctly Dalmatie is the name you mentioned in the video.
I have to say early , big  and very good flavored fruit sounds good to me.
Only the lack of vigor worries me a little , but not enough to not try it.
Just need to find a source now.

Hi Kerry,
I would not call it a lack of vigor, as it is known from Black Madeira, Grise de Saint Jean or other varieties which grow slow for different reasons, I meant that a matured tree of Dalmatie will stay smaller, about maximum 2-3 meters wide and the same in the height, compared to other varieties. The amount and the quality of fruit it produces is impressive.
Others may have other experiences - as mentioned, I am in zone 7.
Mike

If it is totally red inside and not amber with a tinge of red, then it is not identical to Brunswick.
We will see more when the fruits get ripe.

Mike ,
Thanks for the clarification on the vigor.
I appreciate the follow up.
Sounds as if you really like this cultivar and with good reason.
I found a post by Jon from about a year ago where he says it is a keeper for sure.

My little Dalmatie is putting on a couple fruit this year. They may still be too young to mature them but it's fun to watch them try. Thanks for the cuttings, Mike!
