Dark or Light - What's Your Preference ?

So I've read with humor how Martin loves the dark figs and of others trying to entice him "into the light ". Made me wonder what was everyone else's preference  ? I know taste is subjective but just curious.

Dark or light ?

I have to side with Martin , I love dark figs with red jammy centers. Of course I may not have tried the "best" in that category , but a really ripe Negronne, CH or Sal's C is really delicious to me ! Some of my trees are too young and others will have fruit for 1st time this year , so will see if any change my mind . Right about now though , I'd love any ripened fig !

A ripe white fig in my hand is worth two dark ones still on the bush... and vice versa.

LOL I like your way of thinking James !

Nothing like a ripped dark fig

i like them both. they are different in their own sort of way.

Absolutely on the dark side here. The lighter ones I've had (not that many) were kind of like eating a mooshie grape, yuck. Even tasted like a green grape. Give me a textured jammy fig any day.

I'm plotting the demise of my light trees mahhahahah

Tami, try a Panache and you might sing a different song.  What light figs have you tried?  Offer your light trees for sale and make some $$ rather than kill them.

Bob,
Even the varietals page says the taste of Panache is 'mediocre" in the south. That's why I opted to not get one. I've had my Excel and 2 unknowns so far and not excited to try more. I have several and will probably try them next year but if they are still mushie grapes, they're outta here. I'm hoping my green greek can offer a different flavor.

Tami have you tried Atreano? I do like that one , but don't know how it does south. I'm hoping good . Adriatic?

Kill them - noooooo!!

I like more of the dark figs than light ones to eat fresh. Most any light figs are good for preserves/jams.

How about a Stella/White Greek ?  Adriatic JH ?
They are quite competitive in the taste department .

Yes.

I have Atreano but have not gotten figs on it this year, maybe next year. Adriatic was said to be "disappointing" in the south. I also have the Alma's to try next year and a China White, I have several but now I'm really skeptical about them.

White Greek, i'm still waiting on it. Paradiso Gene is to die for.. only if it doesn't rain while it's swelling and turning color.

I just took a look at the White Greek on the varietals page and have to say, it does look good. I find nothing on the Green Greek or the China White, anyone care to give a rundown on either of those?

Pete, a Paradiso, yes , I forgot about it.
What people say about a Strawberry Verte?

i don't have Strawberry Verte, but i heard dennis saying it's really good. i think dennis like all the figs.. :)

This going to be without any in depth discussion of the honey figs?  I mean, let's put aside the vertes/adriatics and CddB.  More Jurupa and Sierra, and of those with fruit tastes, Emerald Strawberry, Paradisio Bronze, K-6-5, 187-25, ok?  I can imagine people simply accepting various white figs for what they are, even if they don't give the pleasure of a black fig.

I have limited experience with the light figs, but I grew up on Celeste like everyone else in South Louisiana, so I tend to think dark figs are better.  LSU gold however is pretty darn good.  I think I just like figs...

don't have any honey fig.. i had Beall (is that honey?).. but not sure if i still have it. i think it died. by the way, Paradiso Gene when ripen right will have all the complex flavor you will ever want. it has nuttiness, honey, bit of watermelon, and hint of raspberry.. it's good, at least to my mouth. the taste is very mellow. not like VdB with its "wow", single sharp, sweet, burst of raspberry.. but.. just different.

now.. i'll have to wait to see what CdDB will be like. it's slowly getting bigger.

Dark types.

Panache and Madeira in same years ripened to perfection .
Panache rubbery skin, flavor decent but not excellent on my palate - no longer have.

Madeira everything i heard about this fig from Jon P. years back when he first mentioned and from very first fig eaten off tree was top notch
on palate.

Dark types yes are attractive with nice red pulp but there are others with not so red pulp that are keepers such as this fig that was plate licking good.
View picture you may understand.

Dark red interior and purpleish interior yes have those pictures as well but dont want to seem like im bragging .

Come to the dark side !

Aren't Bealls the most perfect inverse?

Ok, as a newbie, I have to first say, I didn't even know there was more than one kind of fig until last year, so my experience is limited.  I have had a green fig and a dark fig and I prefer dark by far.  The dark was sweeter and just had a better flavor.  That being said, I have no idea what variety of figs there were.  If I can get more of them this year, I will get pictures of leaves and figs, so maybe some one can help identify them.  Ask me again in a year, b/c I'm definitely learning a lot on this forum.  =)

Where would the Long Neck Yellow be in this game?
It is not on a dark side but I have heard the taste was good.

I don't want good taste, I want fabulous taste if I'm going to take the time effort and money to baby them. The reward should be at least equal to the output.
