Dark or Light - What's Your Preference ?

These two, let me say, are a gift from the Gods !

Superb taste and flavor plus their Amber and Rubi Cristal syrups .... Difficult to say what is best.

Francisco,
What are they?

Yeap! ???

Tami,

They are both Smyrna types.

<Inchário Branco>  and  <Inchário Preto>.

Very old varieties already mentioned by Gustav Eisen and Condit in their respective works.

Condaria, JH Adriatic, Blanch De Deux, Excel, Stella, Lattarolla, Genovese Bianco, Italian Honey,
And on and on and on and on.

Tami,

You asked about the China White. I have enjoyed eating the figs of  this tree until this year. The gophers got mine. The bottom line, I am really sorry to see the tree go. It was very reliable and productive.  The tree always had a good early crop of figs and the season was long. The figs were large and of good quality. It was not an exceptional rich white fig like the Adriatic, but it often gave me figs when my other trees were not producing. The tree is very good for Coastal California and was a favorite at the Malibu Cunningham fig ranch.

In sum it wasn't my best white fig but it gave lots of figs that I enjoyed and extended my season. I got cuttings of the dying tree and will try to start over.

Figsation,
I appreciate you being candid about it not being the richest. I will let it grow and see what happens and if we like it. Do you happen to have any pictures of the fruit? There is nothing in the varietals.

No I am sorry I have no pictures of the China White fruit. I think the origin of the tree is Spain. Strange that they call it the China White.

Like olives,I prefer the dark ones, but green ones are better than none at all.

My collection has grown a bit in the past year, with that said the only figs I have eaten fresh are hardy chicago, and a lite honey fig. I like them both but the honey fig last year seemed dry. Have some VdB on tree right now looking good. Also some MvsB

I suspect I prefer the dark ones but have yet to try the light ones.
I have a couple light ones in my fledgling collection and hope to try one in the next year or so,

Francisco,  Where do you and other members find these figs that I never hear of?    <Inchário Branco>  and  <Inchário Preto>.  ..  I think not at Home Depot.  :-)

Thanks,
Soni

Soni,

These are local Smyrna class figs (Portugal),  grown last year in pots in my residence balcony. Their names are in the local language so they are not commonly discussed in this and other forums neither the people is much aware of these names. But they have been around for ages and mentioned on old American papers of the early years of the XX century, by those same  botanists I mentioned on a previous thread.
They may eventually be still available from UCD collections

Their particular characteristics derive from the fact that they were subjected to a full exposure to neighboring caprifigs and were pollinised by the little insect.
This exposure does a lot of good to every summer fig.

I noticed that you would like to have Violette de Solliès on your collection..
Let me send you a picture of a Violette de Solliés fig from my pots and growing side by side with those Smyrnas and with identical exposure to wasps

Unfortunately both yours and our authorities void the transit of plant material and no gift, exchange, etc is technically possible

If I had to choose then I would say DARK RULES! RDB, VDB, HC, MBVS just name a few. But the light figs have there place too. Any ripe fig is a good fig though.
