Dark Portuguese

Hi everyone....

Very impressed with my Dark Portuguese.  These figs seem to get bigger and bigger every year.  This year their average weight was from 100-175 grams and we actually had 2 that weighed in at 220 and 225 grams.

Yes I know...as soon as I quit buying fig trees...I'll buy a digital scale...LOL

Regards,

Luzzu

Congrats!
How do you describe the taste ?
Would you recommend to add to the wish list?

Looks so nice

Wow thats a big fig Ralph! Very nice!
Tyler

Looks very good!  That is very large for Dark Portuguese.  Congrats!

It's somewhat sweet but I find it kind of watery sometimes.  That being said, my father-in-law who is Greek says it's the best fig he's had in Canada.  Reminds him of the figs he used to eat as a child in Greece.

As for a wish list...dunno.  I like it and besides, it's always a personal preference.  The nice thing is that it gives you a decent crop and ripens fully in our weather.

A good fig that ripens is better than an excellent fig that doesn't, I think someone else wrote that when I was very new asking about varieties.

What a monster!

Luzzu,

You sure did a very good job! Congratulations

Never thought this fig to show its true size and colors in a '5b' zone.
It is not 'Dark Portuguese' as many of you call another dark fig from the North of Portugal.

This big one has a few names ... (most, ugly words ?!) but certainly not 'couilles du pape' - 20 gr - !
In my area it's called Arlin.

Given the good practices, plus long dry/hot  summers it is a very good fig, with many going beyond the 200+ grams when fully ripen.

Luzzu,

I think Francisco is right. This variety is not what you usually call Dark Portuguese.

Over here has several names, but the most popular is "Colhões de Burro", that we can freely translate to "Donkey's Testicles", mainly because of its large size (some more than 200g).

A few photos a friend a mine that has the variety has sent me.

The fig has a large ostiole and if left on the tree it has a tendency to split, but with the right conditions it's a fairly good fig with good flavor.

Hi luzzu,
That's a nice big fig. 120 grams make already a big fig... 200 Grams whahoo, that's a jar of jam with each single fig ...
Congrats !

I had no idea these got so large. Thanks for sharing

That is impressive, can't wait until my tree gets big enough to put in the ground.

I'm sure this variety has a local name in portugal, I introduced this variety many years ago. It was a fig growing in a yard of a Portuguese immigrant in my town who brought it from Portugal many years ago. It's not always that big, but it's one of the most productive variety I grow, often has one or two fig at each node.

Interesting.  Too bad so many are split in the box.  Do you have splitting issues to Luzzu?

No Don,  the figs that have ripened so far have not split.
