Dauphine

This is my Dauphine.
I have had it since December 2012. It struggled to grow and at one point I thought it was a goner after this past winter. But we all know how those goners turned out for me, right?;)

I up potted it about a week ago and it seems to be enjoying it. It is growing well and the FMV seems to be going away. Pumped some fertilizers on it and had it on overdrive.

The leaves appear to be that of a Dauphine and the fruit has the dark shade in color. Like an olive color with a thin coat of black brushed on them.
I am very confident it is the real deal this time around.

How many 'Dauphine' figs are there?
I have heard of at least 2.
Once I had one from UCD that did nothing for me, maybe some caprification was needed?

I think Adam comes to mind and one more but just can't think of it now. Been out in the sun too long right after I got my head shaved. Can't think straight.

Me recently going almost topless (hair-wise!);
shaving the top head hair may be a very good cheap option;
most older (male) people do look better is such a cheap hair-do ...
[Edit: once in a while, my wife spends a wasteful/minimum of at least $50 to 'do' her hair,
which I always thought was very beautiful/sexy since our day-one].

Heard Granthams Royal is Dauphine.

Here we have two known "dauphine":
"Violette dauphine" and "dauphine" ... People like them names short and in the end they both get called Dauphine.
On your side of the ocean ... you might have more .
"Dauphine" and "Violette dauphine" are both of the type "common" so no wasp to set fruit - Dauphine is bifera.

I think it now makes it four possible names. GR was not on my radar.

But what do you think as far as performance goes? Is it main only? Does it need the wasp?

I think we posted at the same time. But I also heard V. Dauphine is a different fig.
This is where the confusion begins.

@Rafed, yesterday Michael visited me and he was extremely happy to sample Granthams Royal. This variant is a
MUST HAVE variant here. It is way superior in taste over Desert King. I have hundreds of DK figs and I only ate 1 as
we continue to be blessed with high quality brebas from Granthams R., Nardi Blk, Paradiso Dusan, Paradiso AF etc.
Michael also sampled Maltese Falcon - he never even talked about its excellence EXCEPT GR's. I suppose zonal
characteristics plays a large part in determining how superb a fig can get. I would prefer GR over Genovese Nero.
Michael's visit was perfectly timed and he managed to sample a number of different figs like Abeberia, Colasanti Dark etc.
A Key point to note is -- bulk of Granthams Royal figs ripens about 10 to 14 days later than DK in my zone -- this is perfect.
I will be removing one of my in ground DK trees in winter and plant another Granthams R.

Grosse Violette Hative Red of Argenteuil, Mussega negra, Golden ball, Golden button, Big of July, Adam, Grose of Tarascon, Grise of Beaucaire, the local and synonymic names do not miss in this interesting variety for the precocity of its fig's flowers of exceptional size. This variety which resists well to the transport a light savor and aroma and its skin is veined purple on a base of various colors from yellow to dark purple. It is regrettably very sensitive to the viral infection, to the fruit fly and to the cochineal. [Translated from French] (046) San Pedro type fig grown extensively in southern France. Abundant large greenish-purple breba figs ripen early and have amber flesh with a rich flavor. Second fall crop needs pollination by the fig wasp to develop properly. (1158)

GRANTHAM'S ROYAL
DESCRIPTION
Grantham's Royal was a tree growing in Cupertino, CA. not far from Yamagami's Nursery. The parents of Martin Grantham (an avid and accomplished plantsmen (who had worked at the UC Berkeley Botanic Gardens for a while) were given cuttings of the tree as a wedding gift over 75 years ago from a tree growing in Santa Cruz Ca. What caught my eye when I saw the tree back in 1990 was the enormous breba figs on the tree. Typically each terminal branch had only 1 to 3 figs, at most, but the quality and size was very impressive. It appears to me to match the description of Drap D'Or a rather famous french fig. One would need a rather large tree in order to make a decent fig jam from the fruit. The name Grantham's Royal was my way of recognizing the owners and the apparent similarity to Royal Vineyard (Drap D'Or). (1006) The Breba Crop is 3X as large [as the main crop] and is more pyriform with more brown, green and purple streaks. (910) for DP.

Here are some photos of a ripe Dauphine fruit. If you are in a hurry, I almost lost this one in the beginning.It took about three years before I saw any fruit. It does not need caprification.
The fruit is super small but flavor wise on a scale of 10 is an 11.

Is your tree in ground or potted ? Do you have pics of the leaves ?
The fruit looks like it is not a match for Dauphine. The fruit should be bigger .

Do the main crop Dauphine figs look the same? 

Just snacked on a Granthams Royal before I got into house after work. Just yummielicious.....refreshing
clean sweet taste.

@JD This tree came to me as Dauphine from a reputable nursery that claimed that the source is France. The colors of the figs are close but lighter than a Col de Dame Gris when ripe.
Perhaps that's why based on color it might be called Grise de Tarascon somewhere else. My little tree is in pot.
I'm not sure about the size of the fruit since I've never seen this fig anywhere else.

from what I have read and also seen in LosAngelesFigForest collection the "Dauphine" and the "Violette Dauphine" are two very different fig varieties.
Dauphine is an oval with a bit wider tip (where Ostiole is) Bronze fig with light (white to honey) interior where the Violette Dauphine is a reddish Purple round and a bit flattened shape with a thin purple neck with dark red interior. Violet Dauphine is a superior fig.

Hi Frank,

Local conditions play a huge role in how a fig performs. I have over 80 different varieties and I was making a simple observation based on my experience. Despite its small size, this Dauphine in pot tasted better than any of my early varieties this season and don't mind having dozens of this variety for fresh eating. The fruit was the same size as a play marble and it left me craving for more. I must add that this fig once ripe should be consumed almost immediately as it is super soft and it melts in your mouth skin and everything.
I agree that Violette Dauphine and Dauphine have totally different colors and are two different figs.
