Dauphine Fig... Aka Granthams Royal

This was my first fig from a small tree. I expected a lot from it, was disappointed. I think it will get better in the future. The tree is about 2yrs old and very healthy.

nice looking fig Armando give it time you may be surprised

Nice looking fig!
It seems nice and ripe wonder why it isn't darker?

Will up pot for sure. I think it could of gotten darker, but because I have a metal screen to block out the incredible hot 100 degree rays. Also because If I didn't have a filter from the sun, I could accidentally come home to a dry pot and maybe a severely damaged tree.

Armando Dauphine and Graham royal is not the same fig.

I believe probably a year or two ago some Fig4fun collectors said they were. So, let's see what others think, if they are the same.

Looks like you did a great job Armando!
This year has been the hottest and most dry I can remember.  NOAA said it is the hottest June recorded worldwide in history.  Also the 14th straight month that temp records have been broken.  oh oh

I could have used a metal screen to save some brebas.

Armando - what is your source for Dauphine? I ask because I have an interest in this variety due to the name, you can see the connection from the UCD tag.

I have two trees growing from UCD and both have produced a good amount of main crop figs and a few breba this year. It appears the tree needs the wasp, as the main crops are dropping off although the breba are getting ripe. No wasps on this side of the country so these trees will have to go as I search for what I believe to be Violette Dauphine, which doesn't need the wasp.

For some reason there is some conflicting and confusing information about this variety in all the research I have done to track down them down. Here is the Breba from the UCD Dauphine, which appears to be a bit different than yours, adding to the confusion.

Dauphine Breba

Fig was OK, but not outstanding. Could have left it on the tree a bit longer but was anxious to taste.

Family history here?

....and for anyone who is in the fig wasp area and is interested in the Dauphine from UCD lets talk. Doesn't make sense to grow a tree that needs the wasp here just for a few Breba every year.

It may take a few days to see if I can get the source, I got it from Eric, I believe he lived in a city called Lemon Grove.???a couple of miles near Encanto Fig Nursery.

Nice looking fig, was it insipid? Why didnt you like it?

Ben what does that mean? I tasted a random fig last week I found and it tasted like wine it was gross almost puked lol

I read about figs going sour...

Due to the immense heat maybe I overwatered, which probably made it have not much flavor...I also have eaten some figs that seemed to ferment and have a wine overtone taste.

Granthams Royal have been my best tasting brebas for at least 3 seasons. It's so good to the point we ignore DK

Hi,
From what I read there are two Dauphine in circulation in the US.
One is the true french Dauphine, the second is the japanese one that is the french Abicou...
Yours is not dark enough to be the true Dauphine... but with just one fruit ... Who knows ...

jdsfrance, can you elaborate on the "true French dauphine"

Does it need a wasp and do you have any pics of the crop? I am wondering what UC Davis version of Dauphine really is that I have.

Hi,
Here in my zone7, there is a Dauphine - besides mine that is younger.
The bigger one makes both crops, So definitivly is of the common type. So I decided to acquire
one. Mine is still young, but has 2 brebas... Waiting for them to ripen...
Waiting to see the main crop.

Hi Jdsfrance:

How is your Dauphine's breba production? In our cool climate, Only breba fig can ripen reliable with good taste. in most case.
