Deck Gardening

Hey Everyone,
I just thought I would share some photos of our deck garden that we have. We live in a town home and do not have any ground that gets sun, so last year we decided to convert our deck into our garden.  We used about 10 storage containers to plant tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, strawberries and a few other things. This year we are trying to convert some of the containers into self irrigating planters. We have also expanded the number of planters and what we are growing to include winter and spring crops.

The first picture is from the middle of the summer last year and then I have included some pictures from this year when we started planting in March. The rest of the photos are of figs and of our garden so far this year. I have always wanted to grow figs but we have never had enough sun were we lived. Now, we get almost 10 hours of sun a day on our deck which allowed us to have one fig tree last year (unknown from lowes).  Thanks to the incredible generosity of many of the forum members and the knowledge shared here, my collection has grown a lot this year. I am looking forward to growing and trying new varieties this year.

oh.. my wife would kill me. (and has actually threatened to do so already with much fewer pots on the deck)

Nice deck, and very nice garden...the tented area is a great idea...good luck.

Very nice. Looks like fun. :)

Please be careful of your wood however. Over the years I've rotted out redwood planks by not shifting things around.

She let you put figlets on her hardwood floors? Plastic or not I would go nuts.

The deck garden is fabulous though. What all are you growing this year?

Zach you may soon need a second level to that deck with a simple staircase leading up to it !

sweet!

yupe. all my figs are on the deck too. and front porch. my wife told me to get the ones on the front porch some where other than the front porch. i guess they are going to the front of garage wall facing south. that means more watering...

Thanks everyone for all the comments.

James- I am very lucky that my wife has let me do this with our deck. It also helps that she is a registered dietician and she likes knowing where our food comes from and we try to produce as much on our own as we can.

Gina- Thanks for the advice, we were concerned about that possibility last year, so we just moved the pots around once a month or so and didn't seem to have any problems. I will probably do that again this year. I am also excited to try the self watering planters because I think it may be less of a problem.

Tami- I forgot to mention that the picture of the figs on the hardwood was taken when I was moving the figs outside for some sun- I try not to keep them on the hardwood because that does drive her nuts.  So far this year we are growing beets, turnips, carrots, radishes, lettuce, spinach, swiss chard, kale, broccoli, peas, and several different types of herbs. We have also started cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants inside and will be moving those outside this week. I am also going to try growing pole and bush beans in containers this year. We try to interplant as much as we can to maximize the yield in the space we have- so underneath all of the larger plants we will plant lettuce, spinach or radishes.

Martin- I wish I could add another level as I could use that alone for figs, I am quickly running out of room.

That sounds wonderful. We are doing the same thing here, I'm not a big fan of going bankrupt for a head of lettuce that has been chemically treated. I go out, pick what we need, trim it up and feed the rest to the worm farm. You could do a worm farm:)

We have just recently started this and I am surprised how easy it is to get so many things going for a continuous harvest.

Very good luck to you with the nummy garden this year!

Here are a few updated photos I took yesterday

Very nice deck garden Zach...my son took over a portion of our deck for his gardening project, but he has a long way to go to catch up to yours.

I missed this first time around . Your garden deck look fabulous !! Good for you guys . Where there's a will.....

Hey Zach, great deck garden. Maybe it's a MD thing, here's our back garden deck that is dedicated to our fig trees. Our front deck has our over growing banana trees!

Looks beautiful. I like the combination of zinnias and figs.

Zach,

This is a prime example of taking a little piece of space ( a deck in your case ) and turning it into a living Master Piece.

Great work.

I would grow a container garden this big, if it wasn't for the fact that everything would have to come in for the winter into a small, dark garage...

Great garden. Enjoy your plants!

Thanks everyone for the comments, Mark your deck looks great as well

I had forgotten about this thread from a couple of months ago, when I saw it yesterday.  I literally said to myself "Oh my wife would kill me".  Then I scrolled down to the next post and saw that I had commented that exact same thing 3 months ago.  What does that say about my fig obsession?

Great garden Zack. Thanks again for the figs from Fig Party Day at Bass's. They are doing fine, although the Negretta dropped some leaves during the heat wave. Now doing fine however.

That's really cool

Zach I think you need to talk to Ricci he is a container growing master. He grows all his veggies in 5 gallons all over the place.
