DEER ANTLERS....WANTED

I need a cheap set of matching Deer Antlers.  I plan on carving a wooden, Faux Deer Head -(Black Forest style)- and need a set to complete the carving.

These can be smaller antlers...3-4 points, etc. because the carved head will not be full size.  I found a set at a garage sale, years ago, but they are too small, and only have a single point.  I think I paid less than $8.00 for the antlers.

So, if you have any old, dusty, mounted antlers, that you no longer want, and the price is right...I would like to buy a set or, two.

You can PM / E-Mail me, and if possible, attach a photo.

Thanks for the help.

Frank

Are you sure you don't want them to make that snake oil the sports dudes take for muscle?  :-))

Suzi

Suzi....

No "snake-oil" for me...just a wood carving.  Besides, I'm beyond my "sports-dude" years, but thanks for the presumption.  : ) big smile.

Frank

Yeahj, was just reading about deer antler spray.

Frank
chk your msgs

Frank,

Danny may have helped you out already but I know jpeaspanen is into the whole primitive tool-making thing. I think I heard him mention making a stone knife with an antler handle at one time.

I hope he doesn't mind me bringing him in here but he may be able to help.

By the way. I have one antler that's still attached to the skull! Found it in the woods years ago & it's been on a shelf in my garage ever since. I'd be open to trading for cuttings if this interests you ;-) .

Speaking of skulls, I have to say this.  My ex neighbor (Howard Hughes wannabe who married a pole dancer), took her with their kids to his brother's house in Columbia.  The road signs said "Do not get out of your car."  So he finds this a challenge.  Against her protests, he stopped the car, and explored.  He found a cow skull with a machete close by!  Macho man beat his chest and threw it.  Hit a tree, and thousands of bees attacked him.  Now he runs to the car.  SHE rolls the windows up!  LOL!!

That was the best story he ever had to tell.............  We were all glad when they got a divorce and moved.

Suzi

Hey Frank,

Looks like I was mistaken. This thing does have both antlers on it. One of them is just smaller than the other.

Here check it out. I think it looks pretty cool with the black background. Trade offer of some sort still stands :) :

Love the stories and the offers.

Bill...thanks so much for the offer.  I have a pair that almost look just like example, and a set that's slightly larger.

Suzi...A Howard-Hughes wannabe, that married a pole-dancer!  I could only imagine the stories that are NOT fit to print on this forum, that you might have.

Very grateful for the help by forum members.

Deer antlers don't contain anything special. The velvet that covers them as they grow does, but once antlers have grown the blood supply to the velvet is cut off, it dies and is scrapped off by the buck to reveal his new antlers. It is illegal to shoot a deer while it's antlers are covered in velvet. Not because of the velvet but because of the time of the year.
The antler velvet market has always been strong as the Asians will buy all they can get, but harvesting velvet is cruel and dangerous as you have to subdue a deer or elk, etc. and cut off the antlers. All this just to get a growth hormone (IGF-1) is done all the time -obviously - but you won't find any of this substance that's harvestable in the antlers available online or from legally harvested deer.

George, as a hat while dancing around a campfire under a full moon with a bunch of drunken ladies seems reasonable.

I just read some of the latest replies, and offers for help.  I was PM-ed by a member who might have just what I need.

TONYSAC:  Thank-you for such a friendly, and generous offer to help me get a set...of antlers, I mean.

Thanks for all the help.  If I ever complete the deer head carving, I will post photos.  I am a great starter, but not so good a finisher when it comes to projects.  Not a great trait to have.

No problem my offer still stands if things don't work out let me know I also checked on craigslist for you and no good.

Michael,

Also told the hormone is unstable in solution, so even if procured is probably unreliable. I occasionally find a carcass/skeletal remains out in the woods, but mostly leave it for the critters to get their minerals.
