Desert King Fig Tree Video Review

Here is a video review of Desert King.  The fruit are not ripe yet.  I will do an updated video when there is ripe fruit.  I will also do updates of the other varieties that I've already reviewed when they start to ripen.  Hopefully I'll also have a few new varieties to review when they produce fruit this year.  Enjoy.

Very nice video, Joe.  Can't wait to see the rest of the yard this Spring/Summer.
Mahalo.

Thank you Joe for showing your very nice Desert King fig.
Congratulations!
Have you ever managed to ripe any fruit from its second  (main) crop ?

Francisco

Most of the main crop figs on that tree drop before ripening.  But a few of them do stay on and ripen.  The main crop figs are smaller than the brebas.  The main crop figs are not sweet.  They don't taste good.  I leave them for the birds.

Sure Noss. I'll take a look at the photos of your DK and tell you if its similar to mine. From photos that I've seen online DK grown in the Pacific Northwest is dark green on the outside and red on the inside. But in my climate it ripens yellow on the outside and more pink colored on the inside. I suspect that the higher temps while it is ripening cause the color difference. In your climate you would probably see something similar.

Great video and very nice tree - Thanks for sharing!

Thanks.

Thank you Joe for sharing that beautiful DK tree.

I love your Videos please keep 'em coming!

Very nice joe. Mine only has 1 fig! Hoping for more. Big difference in ground vs my potted.

Feigenbaum and Figfinatic thanks.

Noss this is the first year that I am seeing many single lobed leaves.  Most of the leaves in previous seasons were three lobed.

Hi Noss.  I don't see your email.  Maybe you can resend it or send it as a pm.

Noss,

I just sent you a message.

Its there Noss.  I see it too.  Nice tree.

Noss - any issues with DK splitting?  I just got this variety and am curious how it will do in the south (guess I will find out soon).  When did you pick your first ripe figs from the breba?

Hey Joe,

One of the cuttings you gave me from this tree  is now a foot tall + little tree and has been in the ground  for a couple months now.  It's looking good.  Now I can see what it will be like in a couple of years.  Looking forward to an early breba crop next year.

Thanks for sharing your video

Hi Dave,

That's good to hear.  Did your trees get damaged by the cold this winter?  Two of my young trees died back to the ground from frost damage in December.  Both trees are now starting to grow new buds from the ground.  I'm thinking that they will pull through and start growing again.

I had frost damage this year Joe, but nothing like last year.  Last year a few trees froze to the ground, and then the late spring frost killed off lots of new growth and some brebas.

We got  some die back this year, but mostly just the smaller branches and tips.  Our last frost was in February, and it looks like we're safe for now.  Lots of growth already, and many brebas.  Which means we'll have a long growing season and hopefully, lots of figs.

Thanks again for the desert king cuttings.  I am really looking forward to this one.
