Devistation!

I went out last night to check on the figlets and was crushed to find the juvenile delinquent squirrels had a fine time. Overturned, ripped out, gnawed and spread over 30 feet. Over 25 1 gallon babies decimated.

Went to work like crazy to see if I could save any but it is going to be a waiting game. Now I go out to check if they're still alive, not how fabulous are they today. Those little buggers sucked the joy right out of me. Biggest hit was the Hative D'Argenteuil Jake sent me. It was doing fabulous and was a dried out stick when I found it. I trimmed the bottom and have it back ina root riot cube and am hoping it has enough energy left for a second shot at thriving.

We moved all of them back to the front where the squirrels are afraid to go, my feral cats think they are delicious!

Sorry if the grammar is bad, my computer gave up the ghost this morning and I amdoing this onmy tablet. Sometimes the space bar doesn't feel my finger and I don't know how to go back without erasing everything.

Eleven am and I am ready for the hard stuff grrrrrrr.

Bet most of them do just fine. Good luck and smile's to you.

only good tree rats are dead tree rats.

If my eyesight was what it used to be, they would be tonight's BBQ!
I hope you're right smile.....what's your name btw?

That's tough to hear, Tami.  I hope the trees come back to life.

That is heartbreaking.  I hope they do OK for you.

Tami, so sorry to hear that. I hate those d--- tree rats. Not good for anything.

One good thing, my Carini's and my Zidi were untouched!
Thank you all for letting me vent. Makes me look better than howling at the moom, huh?

Tami, I'm so sorry to hear of the squirrel damage. Thanks to Ike and Rita we have very few now. I'm sure many figs will recover. If I can help with replacements let me know.

get a silent pelet rifle .........squirrels are tasty

Lol. I keep the pellet gun handy myself!

@ScfigFanatic -> click, HUGE lol!

Thank you all for commiserating maybe I will just pull out the 22 and see if I can get them.

I think I'll try the ball as well, the little creeps love bamboo shoots so I had to fence the expensive ones.

Tim, you are a doll! I only have the Hative D'Argenteuil that I can't replace, I had a couple of each of the other victims. It is back in the root riot to see if I can get it back, doesn't look good, when I scraped it there was no green.

I'm sorry to hear that tami. I hope you can save some of them.

Squirrels don't dare step foot in my garden. Violet (pup in my avatar) is an expert squirrel chaser. To her, the only good squirrel is a dead squirrel.
She's a good dog ;)
So so sorry to hear about your babies. What a heart breaker :(

Tami, sorry to hear and goodluck on the rescue!  I just had a tragedy today, too, due to some storms here.  I'll post an update with some pics tomorrow, but I'm pretty bummed out myself and have little-to-no chance of saving my plant, so watching you save yours will be my vindication! ;)

I caught a ground squirrel in one of these today.  He won't be doing any more breeding. :)  http://www.squirrelinator.com/

Tami,
If I can help please email me. I had skunks do the same thing to me one year -- it really hurts.

Noss, I think I paid about $75 and it included a basin to drown them at a Lodi Vineyard and Orchard Supply.  The trap has two small side doors that are slanted and the squirrel pushes on it to push it up and get in but can't lift it to get out.  I put some grain corn on the ground inside the trap and a few kernels outside.  The local seller just started selling them last year and hadn't done big business with them but said one customer reported they worked great.

I reported in another thread some months ago that the Kania trap works very well for some folks with tree squirrels.  I had suggested it once to a gardener in Florida and she reported she had caught SEVERAL HUNDRED squirrels in her one trap.

Fortunately, I just have a relatively small population of ground squirrels.  For people that trap large numbers: http://www.chicagoreader.com/chicago/why-eating-squirrels-makes-sense/Content?oid=7215952

Michael, thank you so much for the kind offer. I think I have it under control but will lose several. Then we had the cold snap which made them unhappy as well. I was just out there telling them to get over themselves and get on with it. haha

Doug, I don't know if I can do it either but I'm sure thinking about it.

At least it wasn't your fault.  Many of mine are in the same boat because of neglect.  Trying to snap to the wishes of the contractor's "make a decision," and living one day at a time between two houses... I've lost several, but I still have hope.  Just no time to hover.

Suzi

I'm sorry Suzi, factoring in the guilt isn't any fun.

Thank you Noss, I'm sorry to hear about the health problems, I really hope you are both recovered.

Noss, I didn't know about the health issues, and I adore you.  I've been missing alot on the forums due to home renovation distractions, but health is another thing entirely!  My prayers are with you both.
