Did you ever see this happen

I took my trees out of storage in the garage and moved them closer to the over head doors so I can start to water them. Well this tree was planted last spring in the ground, made alot of figs and was doing great. I had to remove the tree because of the new green house. The tree ball was great alot of new roots. Well I started to water and see this.

I've had many trees split at the base due to cold+wind damage over the past 4 years, but nothing like this. Normally when this happens, the top is toast and the tree has to grow from the ground up, but I have not had a tree split below the basal flair. I hope the roots will push out new growth for you. Give it a long while to do so.

What variety is this?

Severe cold splits/ cracks... wow. I don't know... it's too close to the root system, and the cambium at the edges is drying? if so, it will damage the entire tree... All you can do it plant it deep enough just to cover the rootball and hope for best. Nature, sometimes, finds a way to heal itself.

BTW, What type of fig are you holding in your hand in your Avatar? Looks amazing.

Have seen it on ours just not to that extreme.

It can be from a trunk that still had too much water in it and froze, that though is usually just a bark split.  It happens to the citrus trees here after a very bad freeze....or it can be that the tree died and has dried..just the way firewood splits.  My bet is the second one and if so the tree is sadly done.

I had two fairly large 15 gal trees to do this over the winter while stored in my attached unheated garage.  I made a mistake
trying to help the trees all I could during single digit temps. I covered them with a tarp and blew hot air under the tarp. I lost
a good many trees. I think the moisture was sapped from the trees and died.

The tree WAS a Chicago hardy (ha). The kicker is there is about 35 more trees in the garage that look great no damage.

Aaron, I dont know what kind of fig it is. I got the tree off CL for free. It made those big figs once then never again that big. I have since gave away the tree to my friend who has commercial green houses.

Looks like Fioron Di Ruvo...fespo. too bad it didn't do well for you. that's a collectable item

Re: CH ... if the tree is a goner, try to get as many cuttings from it as possible, that way it's not a complete loss. And if the trunk and rootball survives, it's a bonus.

If it is cracking because it is dry you won't get any viable cuttings.

searching and trying never heart anyone.

Aaron I still have a small tree from my Avatar and I can get cuttings from the mother tree anytime.

I've seen this with other kinds of shrubs, but never this bad. I would paint it with tree wound sealant and see what happens.

Hi fespo,
did you twist the tree in the storage ?
It looks like you twisted the tree -by putting another tree against her - and she got dry and thus those bark splits .
I would try to tie the trunk back /twist it back to initial position - like grafting side A to side B of the same tree - I think it is worth the try although the trunk is probably already toast .
I have a tree that on a lateral branch had the upper part of the bark that dried - but the branch is still growing and making figs ... So that trunk might recover with only half of the bark kept alive ...
