Did you winterize efficiently?

Geez I hope I did. Idaho weather for you. Car covered in snow, backyard, my fig-canopy, even Lake Lowell is frozen... I hope my fig trees are hanging in there.

Still snowing here. How are your fig trees doing?

Mine is happy as can be!!

Of course it is in the ground, had snow at Christmas and it was very cold for a few days so the snow stuck around for that time.  We got RAIN!!!!  And a lot of it yesterday and today.  Everyone is happy since we have been in a drought.  My tree still has beautiful green buds just waiting to come out;)

i like to spoil my figs. they are nicely tucked in my garage. i'm actually thinking leaving some of my figs outside next year. if the weather is this mild next year, i don't see the reason to bring them inside. and try few in the ground also.

Doing fine.....of course it was 82 degrees yesterday:)

Recent trip to Frankfort Kentucky yielded some much needed snow for my two gals.

Great picture.  Nothing more beautiful than snow covered trees.  Unless they're fig covered trees.  ;)

I only have one tree covered the others I purposely left uncovered. Last winter was very mild and some the trees that were covered didn't like the heat build up. I have 16 in ground trees that need to be covered. Any volunteers?

Bass,
I am a little confused by your post (doesn't take much LOL).
You are testing for cold hardiness, haven't gotten them all covered yet, or both?

Jennifer yes had a new radiator put in the old jeep.
Oh and
in keeping with the forum etiquette fig trees snoring good in the garage.

Jennifer, I use to winterie my trees but not anymore.  It's real pain to wrap and protect 70 trees and unwrap and remove all the leaves.  I used this product called a Shrub Jacket.  It worked great but they really were not made for 4+ tall trees like figs.  Plus the sun and weather take a toll on them and they decompose after on season. However, the one I made for my Negronne turned out to be the best.  It was easy to make but needed to be taller.   Here is the thread I started:

i think bass is testing for cold hardyness,

i dont have any of my trees coverd eather as the past few winters have been mild. we had snow on the ground for about a week so far this year and thats it. i lookt at my trees daily and they still look great and asleep. not seeing any sign of damage eather. but i am also testing for cold tolerance in trees for zone 6.

now some of the trees i will be planting in spring like RdB, VdB, ect will have some winter protection for next year (just to be safe, dont want to lose any of those ones)

Yes, but with these warm temperatures I might have to unwrap them.

Navid.

The 55 gallon barrels which I used to cover my trees have failed. I feel like an idiot getting cold damage in Central Texas (zone 8b). More so that I have had near 100% die back of the tops of my trees for the past four years. And even more since there are trees within 30 miles of me still in full leaf. Oh well, back to the drawing board.

James.  Do you have pics of what you did?  Was there any insulation in the barrel?

Jennifer,
I just have the first snow last night in my area.  It is not that cold, but snow still covers everywhere this morning.  I am glad I have already moved all figs to against house wall.  Unless it is getting extremely cold, most of them should be doing okay.

I worry about my figs and plants untill we get snow to keep them warm.Rex

hi Jennifer

My in ground Hardy Chicago is tucked away, BUT no snow! And the temps are warming here in our January thaw. hopefully, my bed of leaves will keep the tree chilled and sleeping duing this thaw!

Well, even us in sunny S. California San Diego county are facing a cold snap, with temps down to freezing for the next 3 nights.  Will see how everything fares here, since we have so many tropical and sub-tropical plants in my area.  My figs seem to do fine, but a little worried about my Papaya.  I will be covering that this evening.

Papaya can take mild frosts and regrow from suckers, they don't look pretty though.

This year I tried something different, I did the same tie everything up and wrap with burlap but then I put a layer of the foil bubble insulation around it and then put a garden fence around that, when it got cold enough I put loose cellulose insulation inside the fence to offer extra insulation then a tarp around the fence and a bucket on top of the opening to stop the rain, I don't know if it will work but cleaning up the insulation is going to be a real pain in the ass I think.

This year I am using styrofoam insulation noodles made for water pipes. I am trying them on the lower 2-3 feet of my main trunks. We don't have extended freezing weather so I can easily take these on and off as I need to. I am growing this in ground tree in bush form. I have left a couple of extra stems unprotected to compare.

Most I do

This is my two in ground fig trees second year.  I'm not protecting them this year.  I hope they make it through the winter.  They grow like weeds so I should get figs even if they die back to the ground.

To me it was a combination of no time, laziness, doing too many other things, and testing for cold hardiness.

All in the name of science bass
