Dip n grow

I have some cuttings that have been in moss for exactly one week now, and my dip n grow finally came in the mail. Could i take them out of the moss, dip them and then return them to the moss or just ride it out? If I do dip them, should i cut a little off the end first? Also, an Italian Honey Fig cutting that I've had in moss for two weeks is starting to send out some shoots but no roots. I realize I'm nowhere near out of the woods yet but I'm still quite happy to see this. There are two other cuttings in the same moss(same cultivar) that haven't budged yet though.

Lukie,  if I were you, I would  take them out one by one, would do some small scoring like Doug does, dip them in that hormone and  put them back pointing their tips in the same direction, then, I would lean the container, so the cutting bottoms of are pointing up        - that is how I do to get them to send out roots first. (I learned that from the person I bought my grape cuttings a year before I got the fig fever) the idea is the same, but putting the cutting upside down, it tries to grow, but pushes roots instead.    I even have some cuttings in cups, upside down, if the cutting is stuborn and want to make leaves first  here below.

Only one cutting of this variety and wanted to leaf first, so in the cup upside down it went...  Hope that helps

you might want to brush it on instead of dipping, only brushing the areas where you score the cutting since the existing areas are already callusing, I'd guess.

Good point, I don't think the dip and grow would stop the callous, it would only enhance it, no?

I had a stubborn MS VS black that I had in moss for 4-5 wks. I dipped it 3 times. The third time I was about to give up on it. I dipped it , put it back in the moss and back in the zip-lock and then back over the heat register, 3 days later and BAM! I had like 10-15 roots that were an inch long. No, it wont hurt as long as you are mixing it properly. I don,t score the ends. Not that it doesn't work, just haven't tried that like some others.

Lukie,

I had a similar situation, the dip n grow at 10x will burn the newly emerged roots, but they will take off afterward. I will agree with everyone that scoring increases the root mass, so that should be done before brushing on the dig and grow. I have brushed the dip n grow on the entire lower 2 inches of the cutting with good results.

I use Dip-n-grow on other plants but never have for figs, but I have considered it. How far up on the cutting are you using the hormone and at what dilution rate 20X? The scores you find effective are you actually slicing a thin strip of the bark cambium off or just cutting to the wood without removing any material?

Thanks

Thanks

Doug, I have just put up about 25 cuttings that have not rooted since 11/16/12. I followed your directions on scoring. I am using Hormex
instead of dip N grow. I will post progress later.

Thanks everyone, I truly appreciate your opinions.
