Disappointing yield :(

I didn't count all of them this year, but I would guess there were about 30 on the tree!

Last year was the first year and it gave me 21!  I really thought I was going to have a lot more.  Plus the #@#%$*#^ birds got a bunch too!!!  I think I had about 12 - they were good but 12???!!!  It's just not right "sigh".

I think it was due to the change in the watering and feeding compared to last year.  Last year I was out there every night watering since it was in the triple digits for 40 some odd days.and I didn't have the puppy so I had the time for garden stuff.  This year it was down right cold in April, so maybe that affected the growth and formation of fruit.

I have managed to fertilize the cuttings from the winter - Amazing what a little food could due LOL.  They are still in the 16 oz cups, but they are growing.

Hi Joann .
you sound optimistic ... anyhow are these in big pots or in ground?

21-30 is a 42% of increase not bad at all.  The birds well...can't blame the tree for that lol.

The tree is in ground, about 7' tall, plus there was some nice branching.

This picture was taken in June.  The stakes in the garden are 5',

JoAnn, Look at this way. The tree is setting up some nice branches so it can give you a bumper crop next year.

If it doesn't then threaten it with a chainsaw and watch how fast it grows figs ; )

See, I was thinking...awwwww, 30 figs is sad but not bad, then I read this post and it sounded like something my husband would calculate! lol And actually a 42% increase in yield is really good. I also like the chainsaw threat...giggles...that's more my style.

I currently have a guard snake in residence. if he stays I doubt i'll have bird problems, I try to let him know he;s wecome. perhaps you might encourage local snakes? anything that eats mice is my friend.

Sophie,

I like to look on the positive side:)  And ironically as I type this I have a Sophie curled up on my lap lol:)

I have a Sophie lying right next to me, too! I would do backflips over that many figs ;-)

I was looking forward to a lot of figs with all of the new growth - maybe 50-60 YUM!!  Maybe next year.  I still may get some for later in the season, that's what happened last year.  I was getting some in Nov., granted they weren't nearly as good as the summer figs - but they were figs!!

Tony, I thought those branches were going to give me figs THIS summer!! LOL  Hmmmm.....chainsaw.........you may be onto something - do you think it will work with the rest of the garden?  I built the raised beds this year and put in new beautiful soil and that is a disappointment also......... the little hairball I have - aka new puppy has dept me from the garden.  She is so demanding!  Play Play Play Cuddle Cuddle Cuddle, she really likes me LOL.

Wait till next year!

I hear ya Joann,

If it's any consolation, the birds are bad everywhere.
Catbirds and mockingbirds here in NJ.
Plus everything here is 3 weeks behind due to the cold Spring and crazy rain.

As much of a pain as it is, bird netting is really the only thing I found that works.

Main crop soon tho!
