DK question for the pros

I have three desert king fig trees planted in my backyard last year. Top killed over winter and 3 foot of new growth so far this year. They are starting to put on figs. No this is where things get hazy for me. I live in zone 6b illinois, there is no fig wasp. I have read that they need to be pollinated and I have read that you need more than one. Which is it. If I have more than one will I get figs. Or only with the wasp?

The first crop will ripen without the wasp, the second needs the wasp to ripen.  It's the same for 1 tree as it is for 10,000 trees.

breba crop is only worth keeping on DK. the main crop won't ripen since they require pollination. i don't think there are fig wasps in IL.

Pete you are correct only the nasty stinging ones.

Could I pollinate with a paint brush I do that with my citrus when they are in the house. And flowering. Might be a dumb qhestion

If you can buy fig pollen you can drill a hole and blow it in.  But then you have a hole in your fig and as it ripens it will attract insects and critters.

Sounds like to much work there. I will just protect the trees real good this winter and shoot for brebas next season. Guess the figs that fall of will go into the compost bin.

Dave, what i read is that Desert king does not like pruning. it produces brebas in its year old branches,so, people keep 2 trees and prune each in alternating years, so one tree produces figs.

in this video towards the end, he describes the pruning.

I got three.

you can prune after the breba has been harvested. new branches will grow and next yr, you will have breba again.

Daniel, where are you located if I may ask.
