Doçe Fig

Forgot to post picture of this one ealier so here it goes. I received cuttings from my cousin in Late february from Madeira Island and rooted very quick by mid april I trasfered from cup to a 6" pot and by late may it went into a 2G pot and brought it from my work to my parents backyard. Now pics of the life of the cutting in its first 6 months.

Here it is in late April

Here it is in August

Ripe Figs October 21st, 2 figs on the right were not fully ripe. Although they ripened late they were extremely sweet.

This is very similar to a fig I have called Matta.

It has a nice tight eye, that oozes honey when ripe. Very sweet tasty fig.

Hi Bass yes indeed similar my plant is still imature so in the next couple seasons It will be easier to determine if its a unique variety or just another marseilles type. It is very similar to my Ficazzana both in leaf and pulp colour but the Doçe was a bit sweeter and ripened a month later when temps were cool and had been hit by atleast 2 frosts.

Rather similar to main crop Latarrula(amber) too. Nelson, any minor seed crunch from Doce.

Hey Paul, yup definately has crunchy seeds. Again plant is still young hopefully this season I can have a better report on it as I have a few white pulped variants now and will be comparing them.

Doçe, Ficazzana, Lattarula, St. Anthony Marseilles

I hope to have a chance to compare Doce with Latarrula(Amber), Latarrula(Red), Ficazanna and Grimo's Unknown White fig. The unknown white
fig from Grimo is very similar to Latarrula(Amber). My St Anthony is a dark fig. I did not give my Doce chance to fig last season as I wanted it to branch & get some growth. Its multi branch now, so I can let one branch to have some figs.

Definitely reminds me of the Italian Honey (Lattarulla -sp?) fig.

Paul my St. Anthony is from Edible Landscaping the white version. I hear the dark one is better anyhow so you should be happy that you got the dark version.

George definately similar, and could possibly be the same or a close cousin lol just need more time to confirm.

Was told by a US fig reseacher that the dark St. Anthony was very good. He send me cuttings but none made it. However in our correspondence he mentioned Jon's plant is similar to their research plot plant  & I decided to get it from Jon after the cuttings failed. He also cited the "green" variant is not as good. You are most welcome to an airlayer this year. Let me know.

Once again i read on forum

I hear the dark one is better anyhow so you should be happy that you got the dark version.

He also cited the "green" variant is not as good.

But for some reason i rarely recall reading the opposite on forums in these regards, now dont get me wrong im not saying light types are not good
as there favored for being sold in jars but ........

Hey i could not resist the jab dont take it seriously.
All in fun .

Hey Martin lol I knew you were up to something when I seen you posted. Its all good I too am in the same boat as you I can honestly tell you dark types are by far superior in taste for me thus far. Now ofcourse there are quite a few very good white figs but the majority of the dark figs I have are superior.

Martin hope you got room for one more fig.

That is one nice looking fig Nelson and Bass!  So St Anthony comes in light and dark?  I did not know that.  I got some St Anthony cuttings from Jon last year.  I think they are the dark one.  My cuttings took and grew fine. Martin, you're gonna have to make room for one more fig!  Hehehehe, cheers

Looks like my Green Italian and Portland 3.

Nelson, great looking fig. It looks close to an unknown that I have. I got it from a co-worker. I went to his house today because he told me to come and cut all that I wanted from them. He is not into figs his Dad planted them some 40 years ago. He is going to cut  them down because its a pain to mow around them. So I now have a pile of cuttings. Some  pics. of them are in this post.
