Do fig trees do better in pots or in the ground?

Do fig trees do better in pots or in the ground?  i notice many pics posted are of figs in pots?  is this because they do better when their roots are confined.   any help greatly appreciated, thanks.

They do well in both. Which is better depends on climate and other factors. The best figs are probably from mature, in-ground trees. But potted can produce excellent fruit.

In cold winter and short season climates pots are a real advantage by avoiding winter injury and lengthening the growing season.

Thanks Steve,  i was getting ready to plant some 1 gallon blk Mission in the ground and was wondering if i should make something to restrict the roots.

I won't try to restrict the roots. But best fruit will come if the in-ground trees aren't over watered or over fertilized.

i'm putting all mine inground this year. more and better fruit, less lugging heavy pots.

but, i spent a great deal of money and labor to create a micro climate where they could thrive in zone 6.

Hey SusieQ,  It sounds like we are doing the same thing!  I put up cedar pickets up this weekend to create a wind block and I think my few figs will / hopefully do good on the east side.  BTW I am in NM too!

hiya bert. are you in the drought zone? i planted3 figs today in the lee of the fence.

i was pretty happy i could work out of the sandstorm. we used to have sandstorms once or twice a year. now it's several times each week.

plus high winds used to be in april. last year it went thru may.

if your weather permits, and you have good soil, ground is much better. however, sometimes those things are not exactly available, then the option is container culture. but even if those options are there, some still prefer the container culture for whatever reason. then there are those who live in rather not very fig friendly weather and still insists on putting them into the ground. so... whatever floats your boat.

hiya pete. those pots are fine for you big strong boys. some of us can't deal with the weight.

i don't have fig friendly weather. but when the extension agent said i couldn't grow figs here
i had to do it.

costs thousands  , but i'll have figs, peaches cherries n ornamentals in my little oasis.
