Do I pinch this fig or leave it?

This is a 2+ year old Chicago that I purchased from a local forum member last year - it may have been 2 years old last year.  It is still very small.  As the picture shows, I have my first ever fig growing on it.

a) do I let it go?
b) is it a main or breba?
c) should I put this plant outside in full sun or inside where it gets 3-4 hours of full sun and then partial for the rest of the day?

Thanks all.

Andrew

Pinch after 5 leaves.  That is the rule.

Desert Dance, the question is whether to pinch off the fig or let it grow.  The plant is still small, but I'd love to actually eat a fig <g>.

Andrew

Do you want a big strong trunk with no figs, or a lot of branches with many?

I'd leave it on.  Many would pinch it off.  Chances are it will be good now but better in future years.  You want to give it as much sun as possible but you have to let it get used to the increased sunlight gradually.  I also fertilize mine.

What do you mean pinch after 5 leaves?

This would be the trees second season. I would pull that off. It looks like a Breba from what I can see in the picture. You should get main crop figs later in the summer. Also, I would put that tree outside. In the shade at first then work it into the sun. My trees have been out for weeks now. Even cuttings are outside in the shade.

Andy,

As soon as the days start to really warm up, get your tree outside, and gradually introduce it to a full sun location.  I'd repot that treelet in a 5 gallon container and sink it halfway into some surrounding soil.  Let those roots wander, and get some good strong growth on that tree.  Inside your house is no place for a fig tree.  It will just get weak, and not put out many figs, if any.  leave it outside in a pot that small and it will dry out and cook those roots in a few hours.  You need some more soil volume, and moisture, around those roots.  Some Granular Limestone too.

The developing fig is probably a breba.  If it were my tree, I'd pull it, and wait for stronger growth, and then main-crop figs....but not too many.  Your tree is very small.  With good culture, your tree should triple in size, at least, by the end of the season.  Figs will come when the tree gains strength and enough leaves to support the fruit.  Build strong, stem(s) and branches, first....the rewards will come later.

Good luck, and happy growing season.

Frank

If you decide to leave it on, watch the growth.  If it doesn't grow vigorously then pull the fig off.
