I want to have an "Italian garden" at our house. I'm working on it. When I was young there were so many near my house. The entire backyard was fruit trees and vegetables. Montreal has a big Italian community and there are many " Italian gardens" we saw up there. Really a great place to visit is the Jean-Talon Market. They even have a speciality fig that grows up there and is very expensive.

Btw I'm not Italian ... I'm Polish.

Let's say I plant a fig tree in a similar olive barrel planter. Taking it out to prune the roots would be almost impossible.

I was thinking the same Sas, but that kind of plastic becomes britle with time, perhaps upgrade to a larger barrel?  

Art, yeah, Poland (Ohio) isn't all that far. I'm tempted to pay a visit myself assuming he wouldn't mind. Seems like the type of guy you can learn a lot from.

Sas, I was wondering about how you would root prune the trees in the barrel also. I suppose in a worst case scenario you could cut the top third off and pull the tree out. That would still leave you with a decent-sized container for a smaller tree.

How is he selling 'saplings' in Ohio? Have I misunderstood fig sex, doesn't he need the Wasp? Or does that just mean cuttings?

Maybe saplings is an incorrect term, but I am fairly certain he means already rooted and potted up cuttings. My wife keeps urging me to do the same instead of giving them away, but then it seems too much like work to me.
