Does everybody have a secret fig tree in their yard??

Ok here's the story.  I had to meet with a lady who is in the process of buying plants for a new rainforest greenhouse.  She wants to "do orchids" and want me to help find plants which is way cool because I enjoy spending other peoples money as much as my own and more.  We are talking pollination cause orchids have some really interest methods and there is a fig cutting on the table.  I tell her I am also growing figs and she says I should see her fig tree.  It's been at the family home for over 50 years.  Pulls out her phone and shows me a picture of a big, round green fig.  Long story short she is air layering a plant for me and starting a few cuttings in the greenhouse.  So now I suspect everyone has a old fig tree hidden in their backyard.

Jackpot! Congratulations.

Funny how when I get a certain car, some model we'd never heard of before...suddenly we see that model everywhere.
Once we catch the fig bug, we see fig trees all the time.
Hey, wait a minute...
...maybe FMV is a really smart virus that uses humans as a carrier from tree to tree, by making us addicted to the fruit, and unable to fight the urge to 'get one more variety'.

;)

Hi Schaplin,
Surely, but because it is secret ... We can't know about ... And in the end the strain gets lost.
We are lucky when we meet someone willing to share their secret .
But I have some people around that don't want to share/trade ... I'll have to seek those trees elsewhere ...
What kills me, on one of those trees, there are lots of suckers and the guy keeps on destroying them ... Sometimes people are just hard to understand ...
I'll wait, a day or another he'll probably change his mind ...

Hi

So far everyone I've meet has been more than happy to share and talk.  It's just funny that I keep meeting people that have fig trees in their backyard.  I can't wait to get the large, brown fig that grows up in the mountains.  A sales rep is bringing me cuttings from her neighbors tree so I can start some for her and some for me.  They looked tennis ball sized from the pictures.

Post #3;  I never understood that - 'you can't have what I have' - mentality.  Would it kill that guy to give you some of those suckers, that will eventually be cut off the tree and thrown in the garbage?  Too bad the world is full of such people.

schaplin....Hope you get a nice rooted piece of this special tree.  It sounds very interesting.  Good luck

Bonjour jdsfrance,
I'm sorry to hear that there are strange people like that in your neighbourhood. Tell us what cultivars you are looking for.

Sort of like dogs.
A while ago, I read a book whose author said that dogs have been executing a 10,000 year long scam on humans. The idea being if you are a dog who lives in one of our homes, you are king: somebody feeds you every day. Somebody pets you and fusses over you and keeps you healthy and a soft bed to lie on . No more hunting prey in the forest for you!

I have a secret fig tree in my yard.  It is invisible to everyone except me.  I check on it every day.  It is cold hardy to zone 1a.  It is a common fig with a breba crop, two main crops and is also everbearing on through the winter.  Figs ripen even when covered by ice and snow.  It produces both white and dark figs, but it adapts to my current preference by producing two more of each color fig that is picked when ripe.  It has a closed eye and never splits or spoils.
No, you can't have any cuttings -- it's all mine!!!

I know a fig leaf.  I have many!  But I drive through the streets of my small town, and I see no figs.  Sad.  I'm the only fig person in this town, but I don't even live in the town.  I'm in county property, and it goes down hill from there.  No fig trees except for mine.   Now.. this could be a plan!  I'll do some trading.  But most folks in town are derelicts, jailbirds, renters...  not some place you want to be.  We shop about 40 minutes away.  We stock up.  Sad, but lots of gang stuff down in the town.  Hope they can fix it, but I know that won't happen.  The town will grow, as it is, outward as long as there is land, and the opportunities will be on the edge!  Wow!  That's a statement!

Dog currently on bed says she is queen not king.
