Does this look like a Black Mission Fig Tree?

I bought this fig tree (labeled as a Black Mission) from a local nursery in February and was absolutely ecstatic as to how many figs it had already growing on it.

After the figs started to grow to monstrous size and start to soften a little, I started to get a little worried that they might not be mission figs as they were not darkening much

The question is, for those experienced with growing figs of the mission variety, do these look like black mission figs? Pictures of the figs are below -

Unfortunately, the figs met their demise shortly after these pictures were taken. I believe the culprit might have been some local wildlife :(

What do you think?

It looks nothing like a black mission. This looks like a breba fig of possibly Kadota, or something else but not Black mission.

Wow--that thing is gigantic!

Thank you both for the swift replies :)

I am kind of disappointed to learn that it's not a mission fig tree I bought.
I will wait to see how the latest crop tastes when it ripens to decide on whether or not I should keep it or uproot it and make it a gift to my mother :-P

But yeah, the figs sure are gigantic - they're like pears!!

The leaves are similar to a Peters Honey and so does the fruit.

Question,
Did the pot or the label say anything about being from Monrovia?

Rafed,

Thank you kindly for your reply!

To answer your question, no the pot didn't say anything about being from Monrovia.  The plant was bought from Milberger's Nursery in San Antonio Texas and the label was from another Texas based nursery (I don't recall the specific name offhand).

The label had this picture on it, though:

I have an in ground Black Mission but it died on me.
I used to have another one years ago and the leaves used to get as large as a dinner plate if not larger.
It was a wonderful piece of art.

I will however take pics of the leaves from my Peters Honey for you to compare. And if it is indeed a peters Honey then I would not get disappointed if I were you because in my opinion the P/H is one of the best tasting figs out there.

I did mention a couple of times in other threads that the P/H fig gets to be as large as a tennis ball. Looking at the figs you posted only helps me confirm what I am saying.

I will take pics in the morning and post them here for you to see till then maybe others with more expertize can fill in.

Good luck

Doubtful that it is Black Mission.

Rafed,

I will eagerly await your pictures!  You have me looking forward to the next harvest - I can hardly contain my excitement :)

Thank you all so much for all of your assistance

davinci,

Just went outside and took these pics of the leaves from my Peters Honey.
My Kadota seems to be struggling this year but I also included some pics of the leaves as well.
No brebas to offer this time. I think it has to do with the late frost. Oh well.

Let me know what you think.
Please keep in mind, I'M NO EXPERT. These are just my opinions when I said your is or could be a Peters Honey.

Rafed,

Yes! The leaf structure and sheen definitely looks like your Peter's Honey fig tree. Much moreso than the Kadota.

I'm pretty much convinced now about the identity of my mystery tree. It makes me wonder how common of a cultivar the Peter's Honey fig is.

Thank you so much again.  For someone who says they're not an expert- you sure do have a lot of expertise! ;-)

I'm glad it worked out for you.

This is only my opinion but the Peters Honey is much better tasting fig than the Mission.

Now all you have to do is enjoy them ( when practical ). LOL

If the Fig is not what the label say it is,then it is usually a hybrid.
That fig is not Mission, and I doubt a lot that it is Peter Honey.
I would label it unknown, till you grow a Peter Honey 6-10 foot from it on the same level, eather south or north of this one so it catches the same light, and then you can compare to it and see if it is identical or not.
Till then keep it if it taste good enough for you to like it ,or discard it if you do not like the taste.

call it white mission.

Rafed, Peters honey is better tasting than Black Mission?  I have both of them and BM blows PH away.  Peters honey is good but it pales in comparison to BM.  I guess thats what makes growing figs great,  everyone has their favorites.

Ed,

I will quote my own writing;

This is only my opinion but the Peters Honey is much better tasting fig than the Mission. ( My Opinion ) not a fact.

But I do have to agree with you, We all have our favorites.

Thank you
