Does your Spouse think you are crazy?

JD is pretty sure I'm bonkers!!

He bought that last Kadota Fig tree under extreme protest.  "NO MORE"!  Well, OK.  I have a few I'm trying to root, and if I do, I'll just sneak them in a pot for a while or in the partial shade under some big plant somewhere on our acreage, tell him, "I think this is a wild fig... could we drip it"?

He's cool with adding a dripper.  Not so cool with those tree size gopher baskets and the size hole you have to dig to fit that basket in!  I understand that!  This hillside is peppered with boulders, and what you think is dirt, is just a cover over a boulder.  Luckily figs love to get their roots around boulders and under.

Sometimes you hafta get creative!

Meanwhile I am wearing gloves to mask the human scent, and putting unwrapped juicy fruit gum in any gopher hole I see.  I heard it does them in!  If that doesn't work, I'll try ammonia soaked rags... and ....

Not when the figs start ripening...

She's given up.  Now when I get a package in the mail, she just hands it over and shakes her head.

I would say if you asked this question a year ago, my answer would be heck yeah. Now, when it comes to figs she doesn't even flinch.
She will actually give me a hand when I need it. I feel bad because at the beginning of winter I had my wife out there helping me insulating and wrapping my in ground trees. And it was freezing cold.
Well I was able to check four of them today because of the snow melting. Needless to say four of them were chewed up at the base. I'm sure she thinks it was all for none.

How to get rid of gophers in the state of California

Crazy is an understatement....she's ready to kill me!!!!

Rich, you are adorable!  TY for the link, but the bottom line is poison.  I do have that plant  Shhhhhhhhhh  And I freely distribute the seeds.  It's war!  Same as with fungus gnats!  You do what you must to preserve your crops!

It starts with fungus gnats who kill the roots of a new baby fig, and the survivors encounter gophers eating their roots, voles eating their trunks, and birds eating their fruit.

WAR!!

Lol, yup!!! She just doesn't understand and that's okay, I just tell her to be okay with it. You don't have to understand and most people never will. That's what the grocery store has done to most of us. If this country ever goes to hell in a hand basket there are a lot of people that are going to starve from laziness and just not knowing how to grow any thing.

Its all eye rolling and head dropping at this point

I'm with deer hunter. She is ready to kill me! Hoping that her and my daughter like them once they start to produce!

My wife doesn't even like them....but my son does...

she's fine with figs. now i'm venturing out to other fruits, she is rather concerned. there's a good deal on mulberry... i should pick that up too...

Ha! I have been trying to educate my kids about growing our own food and they are quite inquisitive and interested in finally seeing the roots and leaves. And they have asked how can a tree grow from a stick.

Well earlier this afternoon I went outside and noticed about 30 sticks sticking up ALL over the yard!! I asked them what all the sticks were for "We're growing figs too mom!" LOL

At least I know they're listening :)

Yeah my wife (and I) thought wed just have one or two figs and that would be that. I now have 8 in the basement, 4 small ones under grow lights, next to my vegetable seed tray, a persimmon in ground and a few pomegranate cuttings that I just started. She says I've replaced all my friends with plants. She might be right.

My youngest said to me yesterday, "Dad, what are all those sticks in cups over there?  There seem to be a lot of them . . ."

I am also trying to show the kiddies where their food comes from. They love nature as do I, but the wifey has other hobbies, which is fine. She can't understand why I need 30 varieties of peppers, 15 varieties of maters. Now that I've started collecting fig cuttings she thinks I've totally lost it.! Its addictive to see something begin as a twig, that can be nurtured into a beautiful and bountiful tree. Maybe she just needs to see the final product, as there is no complaining when the veggies are free all summer and fall. As for now I'm hiding from her in the workshop after trying to order more cuttings.

YES.

These taken just moments ago....at night. Sorry for the bad lighting.

Stupid car is in the way!

Got more downstairs!!!!

Lol! Now that's a lot of figs! I would most likely start hearing comments from the hubby if I had that many. So far no comments yet, but I see the "look" so I know its coming :)

I'm told I have an addiction... and I do!

Your my idol!!!

In the second picture, you can't see the six fig trees in half whiskey barrels. Each barrel has 6+ 3 gal trees sitting around them. Plus I have Cajun Honey and a few others sitting on the floor that you can't see.

Wife thinks this is nuts! But she eats good every July and stops complaining.

Yes, since day one.

Yes!!!!! He said to me instead of looking at pictures of figs and other plant stuff, why don't I research how to put up some drywall. He doesn't know that I read about that briefly, but went back to figs!

Aloha, Dennis.

If you open up that step ladder, you can put at least 4-5 more plants there and free up some space on the garage floor ;)

Think? No she has proof! Why else would she have married me?
