Cascade is a good hop. an american hop used mostly for microbrewing. typically they are used for both aroma, and flavoring.

no, i don't grow them. but used to use them a bit while brewing beers. they take some set up. they grow very fast. not sure our humid climate will cause any specific issue.

Wife tells me whatever makes me feel good is good for her so....  i hope she fells the same when i bring some fig tree's indoors.

Madame does not have to take care for the trees, but surely takes care of eating the fruits I bring home ... That drives ME crazy ! ... sort of :) .
All my trees are in the garden, so they don't disturb us at home.
Go figure, last winter I had two fig pots for the first time at home, and this winter I now have 8 but 4 are still in the bucket.
Nevertheless in some weeks they'll go to the garden, so for now fig trees don't make the house messy ...
But having success in getting fruits from the trees is the trick I think :)

Noss, sorry about your surgery.  Can they fix it?  That is a bummer!!  I feel really sad for you, and I hope your eyesight improves!

I did something really stupid a couple months ago.  There is a flower that grows 6' tall named Amaranthus, and I have seeds for it.  The entire plant, including the seeds is edible.  Something came up that looked exactly like it.  I figured it was a seed the birds brought.  Every day I tasted a leaf.  Nothing bad happened, so one night I sauteed a bunch of leaves like spinach.  Delicious!  BUT JD was watching TV and I'm on my computer.  After cleaning my glasses several times, I said "something is wrong!  I have double vision."  JD had it too.  Pretty soon we couldn't walk without hanging on to something.  Muscle cramps.  YIKES.  Went to emergency, and I had tried to poison us with Indian Tobacco.  Who knew?  The symptoms lasted for about 24 hours, but that was no fun, and I feel for you!

Besides, she was already used to my other interests being less than mainstream and slightly overwhelming. I do various Native American/primitive crafts, such as leatherwork, knapping arrowheads, weapons and so on. Receiving sticks in the mail is nothing, after years of seeing boxes or rocks and animal parts arriving on a regular basis. My house is like a natural history museum exploded.

Was showing this thread to a friend and she pointed out that it's about 80% guys and 20% women.  Why do more men seem to be into figs than women?  

I've wondered about the male/female ratio for amateur fig growing before - it's a fascinating question.  It would be interesting to know what the gender breakdown is for gardening as a hobby.   If its closer to 50/50 while figs are much more male-dominated then I wonder if the answer lies in how the fig growing thing was usually passed down in families from the patriarch to the son.  You always hear about old Italian gentleman with their prize fig trees but never hear about the matriarch in the family growing the fig tres.

My wife only started to think I had a problem when I told her some of the other forum members spouses said they had a problem.
There are worse hobbies I'm sure.

I think because men typically are the farmers, and women take care of things at home.  Men are usually stronger and can do the fig shuffle and all the heavy stuff.  They are into all the tools and toys that assist them in their duties.  I notice the same ratio on other forums.  Women are usually the flower, herb and vegetable lovers because we cook and decorate on the whole.  There are always exceptions.  Most women can't talk sports.    Most men don't cook. 

It's fun to be in the minority in a forum like this one.

Okay i've tried to stay away from this thread because i did not want to piss her off if she ever read it. Butttttttttttttt i just can't take it anymore. I must I mustttttt. So she see's all these bins / cuttings / pots /  and everything else. It's starting to look like a lab over here. She says to me if i would have applied myself this much in school i could have been a rocket scientist.

She thinks i'm completely mental and when she see's me checking on cuttings or whatnot she says i need to see a shrink with that slight laugh.

My response is always the same. We'll see who's mental when you're eating those delicious figs. Her reply... Married 18 years and just when i think I've seen it all from you !!!!!

( I need to come up with a way to tell her she can't park in the garage next winter. )

I do not suffer from insanity. I enjoy every minute of it. She has a crazy compulsion to hoard food. I fuss at her for spending to much at the grocery store. She fusses at me if I'm not growing and storing food faster than we can eat it. The preppies who say you should keep a years worth of food on hand are crazy for limiting themselves so.

Here's the scenario at my house: my wife does not eat figs and I can't get her to even try one! She gardens but only grows vegetables, flowering plants, and shrubs, no fruits. I garden and only grow fruits. She loves football and knows every football players name in the NFL, their history and family members names! I find it difficult to stay interested enough watch a football game unless it's the Super Bowl. 20+ years of wedding bliss!

Local Master Gardeners, and friends are close to 50-50, Women grow plants, flowers, garden produce type veggies, Men grow trees, and larger veggies.

Insanity knows no bounds, especially gender

She knows I am crazy and she is close to joining the rest of us. LOL
