Seems like common knowledge - dogs like sticks. I wish I had remembered that. I received my UCD shipment on Wednesday and put them in the fridge. About an hour ago I pulled them out and put them on the table and began setting up on my office for the work ahead. Came out maybe 30+ minutes later and there were pieces of stick all over the carpet. I was surprised to see my older girl, who is usually not the mischievous one, had pulled down one of the bundles, Col De Dame, and had herself a snack. She doesn't even (usually) like sticks! But apparently these ones called to her. All I could find were two small pieces. I am going to clean them up and put them in my root riot set up. Once I removed the damaged ends I will have a one node cutting and a two node cutting. I've had good luck with this method with small cuttings so I am hopeful at least one of them will root. Sadie knows I am frustrated and is hiding in the living room. I'm not mad at her, I'm mad at myself. I find that my dog is very interested in the figlets I have outside now. Not interested in anything else in the yard, just the figlets. I have caught her many times standing there for minutes on end just sniffing the little trees. Maybe she can't figure out why trees smell like cat pee??? Ditto Nichole, sorry about your cuttings. Over the winter, the dog took off with two of my trees and chewed up a third. I found the two and replanted them. Two weeks ago, the dog took off with a 3 gallon Beer's Black I had bare rooted and split into three trees. I found all three pieces the next morning (I'm not sure how long the roots were out of water), but the main tree was pretty badly chewed up. The next day, while I was potting up the Beer's Black, the dog was crunching on something for 30 seconds before it came over to me and spit it out. It was a rock. Last night, I potted a Pastillier. This morning the Root Pouch was torn up, growing mix was everywhere and the tree was just sitting on the deck. I am still looking for my pruning sheers and my grafting knife. james my partnets had a dog that ate all the irrigation pipes, pool pipes, electrical pipes and allpipes in generals. i dont know why he liked chewing on them. anyhow 2-3 trees are nothing compared to what they went through with that dog. we even tried castration but he kept on going chewing plastic stuff.... maybe your dog will respond better with that :) . it was funny looking at my dog with that plastic round hat on him after the surgery- looked like i was trying to root somthing on his head . anyhow he ate that too finally. __________________ Eli ,Israel ,Zone 10? Nichole, We all learn the hard way. I had a friend with two lab pups. He discovered how they liked to play with all his little orchids. I had a parrot who liked greenery and gave one of my orchids a good trimming. And every parent out there knows that two-year-olds can move with lightening speed, especially when it involves one of your prized possessions. My older dog chewed only negronne last year or when he want to lay under the tree in summer, he chewed a spot out so he would have shade but stopped since then. Now the little girl has chewed some healthy branches, but only the tips so far, she seems to have stopped but they really love roses, she only has chewed on the dead wood so far but she destroyed a paw paw then saw i was angry and chewed it to the ground. Now she seems to be taking only branches from the ground after pruning so we will see. __________________ Canada Zone 6B

As soon as I read the title I knew what the thread was about. My late lab/mastiff mix did a number on one of my figs, an apple tree, some thorny raspberry cuttings, aluminum siding and he tunnelled through a lath and plaster wall when he decided he had been gated in the kitchen long enough. I have had some really bad luck with a Pug . I had ordered 5 sets of cutting from Jon for the foundation, as well as most of my eBay purchases from last year i had them all set up nice and cozy. We had my sister-in-law, house sit while we went to Montana for early calving season. when I got back, i found out that her little dog had got into the back bedroom and totally destroyed 4 months of work. in total 73 cuttings lost . luckily, I managed to save 6 cuttings. Princess was very interested in pulling up fig plants but 2 warnings of "leave it" cured that. The experiment was a flop. They needed more babying than I was willing to provide at this time so I pulled them out and tossed them into compost. It wasn't much of a loss for me as I needed to prune the blueberry bushes back so it was happening regardless. My online research told me it's possible to root this way, but it's hard. They're pretty temperamental. I may try again next season. Here's a little update on the chewed up twigs - one of the two has roots so that's something, right? Dogs will sometimes gnaw the aluminum tags and allso pull them off. It is good to sometimes triple id the fig. Write on the pot, tag on a limb and a tag on the pot.. well.. my puppies learned not to go into the study, but they are allowed in the garage. they chewed up Socorro Black, Niagara Black and St. Rita. one of the Socorro Black is a goner. they pulled it out and chewed pretty good on it. but St. Rita and Niagara Black is coming back nicely in 1 gal pot. stil have one Socorro Black left that is doing well. __________________ Pete Durham, NC Zone 7b "don't talk to me about naval tradition. Here's another update. Both of the dog chewed cuttings now have roots. The one on the right is getting cocky trying to grow roots into the air.
