Wow, that is a good-looking fig. Thanks for posting. Any more info on it, as far as taste, origin, ... how I can get one?

Does a name like that indicate a zone 6 hardy fig?  Yes, more origin information please...thanks Paully!

Looks good Paul,

Any reason why it was given this name?

This came originally from Lou Pezzuti. he got it from his cousin Dominico.

Hi guys.
I like seeing that Paul finally got some figs to ripen on that tree. The tree name that I gave it is Domenico It/Swiss Dark. I named after my cousin who had it growing in his yard in Switzerland. He has since passed away. When I stayed at his home next to Lake Geneva in Switzerland he only had a white fig tree growing in his yard. They were not ripe when I was there.

He told me that there was an Italian gentleman that had a dark fig growing in his yard. He tasted a couple of them and liked them a whole lot but the person with the tree was not very sociable so he never asked him for a cutting.

Finally the gentlemen put that home up for sale and moved back to Italy. That is when Domenico got his hands on a rooted sucker growing next to the tree. He planted that in his yard and it thrived. His wife still makes loads of jam with those dark figs. I speak with her about once a month. He also told me the he believed the guy came from northern Italy and maybe brought the tree with him and planted in his yard. The guy never told my cousin what the name of the tree was. I placed that name on it so I could keep track of it growing in my collection.

Now you know the story of the Domenico It/Swiss Dark fig tree. Mine are not ripe yet but there are figs on it.
Paul you did a great job.
Thanks for sharing.

Beautiful fig! Resembles my Aldo Palermo Red.

@ Leon, it does taste like Aldo. Ripening at the same time too. I will watch closer for the main crop
for comparison.

Lou,
Was the tree unprotected during the Swiss winters?
Thank you,
Greg

Lou. Nice shape, I like the way the tree branches out.

GregMartin,
The tree is never protected. I looked up the planting zone that my cousin lives in and it is zone 6, Switzerland..
I'm in zone 5 and as you see mine is in a tub never covered just stored in an unheated garage
all winter.
Lou

Lou that is a beautiful tree and great story that comes with it.  Thank you for sharing.

Paully22 Those are great pictures of the figs.  They look like closed or small eye.  Does anyone know how this would do in a wet climate?

Lou,

Great story. It caught my eye, because my father's name was Dominic. (Abruzzese/Molise, though.) The fig is beautiful and well depicted. Thanks.

Thanks for taking the time to post that story Lou.
