Don's Fig Trees in Zone 6

They have over 17 trees that they've been winterizing on time for over twenty years. Very impressive.

They dig out the fig trees annually and throw them into a hole approximately 6x12x5' deep.
Then they cover with leaves, plywood and finally a very large tarp to keep water out.

Due to their heavy weight, the large ones (15 to 20 year old) stay in the large hole and the rootball gets covered with dirt after straightening the tree up.





Too much work!  More power to them, but dang!  I work HARD in my yard, garden, and orchard, but I am unwilling to bury and replant my trees year after year.  Here in my part of zone 6, I am counting on fig varieties that bear on new growth from the ground.  

When I'm working my butt off outside it is with the strategy of making less work for myself in the future.
