Don't Fear The Heat Mat - Thanks snaglpus!

Yeowza!  My indoor grow room cuttings have been stalling for the past month.  I tried LED stoplights, I tried keeping the room at 75 degrees, I tried a fancy 100w red/blue LED grow light, but still everything was slow.  It was making over-watering a real risk.

I took snaglpus's advice from this post, and so far, it is a success!

Two days with my trays on top of a heat mat and my rooted cuttings have really come to life!  I have my own little fig jungle in my spare room now.  My single-node I-258s are blowing up!

Don't fear the heat mat, fellow f4fers.  Just make sure you have some kind of trivet/buffer between the mat and your containers so they don't cook.

Yep, heat mats drastically shorten rooting time for me.  Faster rooting = less chance of rot.

If you want a little peace of mind, use a mat controller and/or a thermometer in bin with cuttings.

You're welcome!  I just wanted to share my results using the mats and felt it could help another.

Heat mats do an excellent job!  I have 2 - 4 foot heat mats under a 3x3 GH.  The thing to remember is you have to control the heat, like this:

Both heat mats are plugged into 2 separate temperature controls.  I have the 3x3 GH inside my garage.  I started 120 or so cutting inside, as you can see by the picture.  My garage is insulated.  The temps inside my garage fluctuate between 55 or 65 depending on outside temperatures.  Today in Charlotte, it's sunny and suppose to be 65 degrees.  My garage door is open and it's 55 inside.  If the door was closed it could get above 60 inside and I don't want my trees inside the garage to start waking up yet.  I set both mats to 76 degrees.  I made dirt bag and placed the heat probe inside the bag and taped it up with blue painters tape so I can easily find it if necessary.  It's pretty slick!

Heat mats were a must for me.  My grow room is lacking space and I have no choice but to set most of the figs trees on the cold, concrete floor (basement) and being able to warm the root zone and the surrounding space to whatever I want is a huge advantage.

My problem with heat mats is they seem to dry out the cuttings if you don't keep an eye on them.

Have mat on an insulated bed and the cuttings in a bin sit on a platform above water base yet need to keep an eye they don't dry out from the bottom.  Have tried different temp settings.  Mix is 80/20 perlite/soil mix so if I water then bigger problems.
At this time as soon as I see roots I move the cuttings to an unheated bin.

Probably just me but I advise keep an eye the cuttings don't dry out on you.

Pino, try wrapping half of your cutting with buddy tape and you shouldn't have cutting drying out. Just make sure you stretch it tightly so it can push through the tape. If you look close at my photo, every cutting is wrapped with buddy tape.

Thanks Dennis.
I'll give it a try.

Heat mats for great! I have my mini grow room set for 84 when lights come on and 76 when off, only way to get to those temps in the Winter.
