don't let this happen to you

My only Chikishlyarskii (in a 1 gallon nursery pot) that I was able to start from 5 cuttings, seems to be very susceptible to overwatering.  It was doing very well then the high temps really hit here.  Came home one day from work , it was about 97F, and just caught it before the heat/sun offed it forever.  Keep an eye on your figlets now that the temps are starting to rise, especially the ones in smaller pots.  The soil was absolutely dry and extremely hot, I don't know how the little tree survived.  I had watered the pot the night before.

all my 1 gal stay under shade. they will go about 3 days before watering once temp goes over 95. it varies from plant to plant also. bigger, faster growing plants will need more frequent watering. right now with temp at high 80, and high humidity, they go about 5 days before water.

i got misters set up in the green house. though sadly i think i lost my black bethlehem do to the heat. it was such a littly guy with a bright future.

That's Houston weather for you. I kinda miss it. Kinda

Up here in NY we never get the sun quite as directly and strongly as you guys in TX.  But still, in the hottest parts of summer, I try to partially shade those black plastic pots, to avoid overheating the soil and roots.  Some of them I partially bury, others I give partial shielding by placing boards, rags, or flat rocks leaning against the pots.  Consider shading the pots somehow, even keeping the tree in full sun.  Good luck with the trees Steve.

p.s. Chikishlyarskii does seem to be a fair haired variety (lighter green than most), at least mine does.  Last year its leaves burned more easily than most of my other trees... but it also has bad FMD symptoms so I'm not sure if the susceptibility to burning is about the variety or the virus cocktail in my particular specimen.  Anyway, good luck with yours, and consider shading the pots... it seems to help.

Yupper, I've now placed all my 1 gallon pots where they get about 50/50 full sun and full shade during the day plus they are on dirt/grass rather than the hot concrete.

Ditto Steve, I moved mine quite awhile ago under a live oak that gets morning sun on one side and afternoon sun on the other. Older figlets are on the afternoon side but only gets from maybe 4-6pm
This heat is a killer, I'm sorry that happened.

Tami,

Tree will survive, but just a caution to everyone not to get complacent.  Almost a hard lesson learned.

been 100 degrees here in illinois the past few days with high humidaty. we are used to the heat, but i like to have spring as a warning first. seems like we went from winter to a slightly warmer winter right into the oven. lets face it folks i think we may be losing a season here.

I found 1 gal white pots, it helps a lot and I keep the little ones in the direct CA sun. The watering is every other day for me

Been low 80s here in our part of Illinois all plants in full sun but being retired there easily watched over.
Dave send some of that warm weather up North but not the humidity ! ; )
