Dormancy in San Diego

Jon,
I know your trees never see frost. On an average when do trees in your area drop their leaves and how long do they stay dormant before sprouting again? I'm curious as to how they behave in their normal habitat vs. the Northeast.

My trees are all young and in containers. Although it is now quite cool here most of these show no sign of dropping their leaves. I have a few with large almost ripe fruit that I moved inside to ripen but the rest with no fruit left or small fruit that won't make it are still outside.

Peg,

It really depends on the year. Last year many still had leaves in January, because we had such a warm Fall and Winter. This year they have been whip-sawed with hot weeks, and cold weeks, and some are already bare, or nearly so, which some are still putting on new growth. On average most should be dormant by mid-November. New trees, esp. rooted cuttings in their first season seem more interested in growing rather than going dormant, and usually have their leaves longer. I keep feeding them as long as they have leaves, to help size them up.

Thanks Jon, this squares with my thinking on new plants. I have a good place to keep them inside and I think that is what I will do with the young ones, specially those that are less than a foot high. Even tho they bore fruit I don't think they will survive real cold weather.

I did the same with my two plants (which had 7 to 8 good size figs on each) and took them inside because cold weather came (5C at night and 15C day time). Before I took the plants inside the leaves were fresh and still very green and healthy. within a week the fruit started droping inside and the leaves began to fall. Since a few sunny days were in forecast for Ottawa with 20C temperatures, I brought my two plants outside again. Some fruits are still there but I do not expect these to ripen. However, I will leave them outside until mid November or whenever the temperature goes below freezing whichever comes first. What is the temperature at which I may loose the buds for brebra crop so I should be careful not to leave them out too cold?
