Dormant Greenhouse figs in icy weather

Stuck indoors.....over the past 2 days, we had snow, sleet and more snow. The greenhouse has a sheet of ice and snow all over. I had to chisel the ice away from the door just to get in. I've been running a small kerosene heater at night. Today, I came out to check on one of my greenhouses with figs. It's 32 degrees outside now and nice and cozy inside my GH....around 50 degrees. The heater is fired up when temps drop to 40 degrees. Here are a few pictures. Enjoy!

Hang in there hopefully this winter storm doesn't last too much longer.
Your figs look pretty cozy not bothered by the storm!
Curious why you have the temp set so high during the dormancy period.  I thought figs should be fine at just above freezing (32F)?

Temps sometime do drop below freezing but my goal is not to let them drop to 25. Some of these are rare and I'm not sure how much cold weather they can take. So, once they're inside, they will stay inside until early Spring.

Dennis, a nice setup you have there. Wish it was mine. :)

Dennis, My problem is, most of my plants stored in the garage is waking up already. Like you suggested, I am trying the keep the temps in the garage down to slow down the activity. I hope the plants don't go back into shock with an extended cold spell.

Mohan,
The warm weather in December got a few of mine waking up too. Improved Brown Turkey, Conadria, Desert King UCD, La Rosa MN, Smith, and a few others. All I can do is try to keep the temps low. Fifty-one degrees is what I try to keep my trees inside my garage. Anything above that will ignite them to wake up. But I don't worry about it. I just open up my garage door and watch my thermostat . When it reach 53, I close the door.

Inside my GH now, it's 44 degrees and 30 degrees outside. Outside temps are expected to drop to 27 degrees my morning. So, the trees inside will be fine.

Really nice setup there my friend. There are many of us dormant green with envy.
We had about 16 inches of snow here today. All bridges and tunnels into NYC are closed tonight. We've been trying to get tickets to  Bruce Springsteen's  concert at Madison Square Garden tomorrow night and even that show has just been cancelled.
My son is bummed that this didn't happen on a school day.
We all have different priorities, thank goodness I have a few of The Godfather  figs rooting and growing downstairs to keep me excited

Dennis, your greenhouse is great!! Glad your fig trees are safe & toasty. How about you & your family? Are you guys doing okay in those blizzard conditions?

Coop: you guys have it rough right now with the blizzard! Glad to see you still have power & arekeeping safe. AND, the Godfather tree is also safe :-D

On a serious note, wishing everyone safety during this difficult weather.

Hi,
Why do you fear a bit of ice ? (look at the water in the bottle)
Just kidding, those cuttings should be on the compost pile. I'm using them as guinea pigs to answer the question: Is it possible to keep cuttings alive outside in the garden ( without borrowing the fridge at home ).
The answer while come in some months...
White on the floor is snow; white on the trunk is lime against insects (ants, caterpillars).
LOL.

Nice greenhouse, what do you put in there after the figs move outdoors?

Beautiful, Dennis!  They look very happy.

Some of these figs will stay, some will not. Those figs that ripen late will remain inside, Col de Dam Grise, Black Maderia, King Arthur, Ischia Green, Ischa Black, Fico Preto, Aubique Petite, etc. These will be converted to 27g self watering pots. And, shade cloth will cover the top too.

Wow great set up Dennis. I'm dreaming and scheming how to finance a greenhouse with the climate battery set up. Your collection looks great. Warm sunshine your way.
