Double embryos

What Cultivars do produce double embryos?

I believe Binello

What is a double embryo--two figs arising from the same node?

Yes

Thanks for the picture- it's so much easier for me to

understand "two figs arising from the same node" if I
have something to demonstrate it.  Maybe I'm not the
only one.

On that plant it's only happening on that one branch

When the conditions are right (whatever they are) many varieties will do this. Haven't seen it happen in about 5 years.

So when this happens, do you leave them?

Or do you pick off the smaller one?

Bronze Paradiso has double embryos every year lots of them.

As does this fig my father has no idea what it is but very very similar to bronze Paradiso.

Nelson, the pictures of those two figs make them look like they would be good figs for commercial growers. Are they cold hardy and can you describe their flavor?

Bob

Hi Bob, I dont know much about this fig the previous owner of this tree moved back to Portugal and left the tree inground at that house. The New owner is the one that sold it to my father and had no clue what it was. But It is hardy seen -15 celcius in the garage and had no damage I will post pics shortly of this plant now with the breba crop must have atleast 80 breba right  now.

The Main crop is so close to Bronze paradiso that I still cant figure out if its the same or not. Same growth patern leaves are pretty much the same figs same colour and taste well if you close your eyes and take a bite of each fig you would not be able to tell the difference. It is extremely prolific and Breba sampled last year was outstanding. The main difference I noticed last year between this fig wich I am currently calling it ludgero's Unknown and the Bronze Paradiso was the Breba.  The Breba on this fig is round and the Breba on the Bronze Paradiso was much more elongated and did not fully ripen. Both figs also produce allot of twin embryos and both figs will generally ripen.

Here is the Unk. Ludgero Breba from Last summer

When you said 'double embryo', i thought you were referring to figs like Fetifero:  http://www.pomonaitaliana.it/pomona/fico_fetifero.htm

In which it's almost like a fig within a fig.

Does it produce a double fig like this Brunswick??

Brunswick & Capelas have tendency to be like the pic Dan refers. Both do produce double embryos. Sometimes I wonder they are the same fig or not.

I have a Kadota that had twin embryos last year.

My Brown Turkey (Improved Brown Turkey) only gets a few doubles here and there; I also noticed that my tiny in-ground Excel has one double right on top, but the rest of its figs are singles. However, on what I believe is a Kadota, taken as a green-wood cutting from a neighbor's tree in August of 2009, doubles seem to be the norm. The photo shows fruit on an airlayer I just started a few days ago, but the rest of the tree is also mostly doubles, and I took a look at the mother tree this morning and it's mostly doubles as well. When my UCD Kadota gets big enough, I'll compare the two to verify that my neighbor's tree is truly a Kadota, but for now, that's my best guess.

Sorry guys I added more photos had forgot to add my fathers unknown twin Breba's. Ok so both these trees produce double embryos for main crop and Breba. I am almost certain they are the same fig but want to see Ripe Breba's from both to compare because main crop is so close in everyway that I cant tell the difference.
