--- Dragon fruit seedlings

It happened that in October 2013, when I started germination of the figs, a quite ripe  Dragon Fruit was for sale at some stores. I bought one (it was red outside/pink inside) and mixed the seeds with figs. They have grown together!
To give some room and sun to the dragons, I cut the fig seedling, they will grow back though.

The white pot is 1 gal, the red is about 1 qt.

Will I get any fruit from them?

Ah, Igor.  You'll get fruit eventually.  Give it about 2 years though.  I recommend starting dragonfruit from cuttings.  They're a lot easier to propagate than figs, that's for sure.  I would move your dragonfruit to its very own pot though as their root system becomes pretty dense.  They might end up choking out your fig.

Nate

I was just curious if they propagate since I have never tried that before.
I am not sure how to hold them during repotting, they look mean :)

Even with the big ones a pair of gardening gloves should work. Nate is right though, they get roots simular to palms so their own pot would be best. You will get fruit when the plant gets to be about 10 pounds.

Mine love manure of any kind and a friend of mine spritzes his every week with fish emulsion to feed the air roots. You will have some of those shortly!

How does dragon fruit taste?
I have seen it on sale locally, but I did not but any (yet).
Appearance kinds of reminds of the veggie purple kohlrabi.

Dragon fruit does not continue to ripen after being picked so most of the ones in stores are awful! A ripe one from a farmers market would be great. They are a lot like figs, many different tastes. Watermelon, grape some with a tiny touch of kiwi.

These look like the night-blooming cereus I used to grow in Fla. How hardy are they? How hard to grow?

They are night blooming. Very easy to grow but also sensitive to the cold. Most are self fertile but some need help with pollination. A soft paint brush will do the trick though. Thirty seconds with a paintbrush and a flashlight and you have dragon fruit.

Im very interested in Dragon Fruit also. Been doing some research on varieties and have a few nailed down. That being said I havent ever tasted one either. Is it mushy inside, firm, simifirm? Is it just sweet with varied flavors or does it have citrus notes to it, any tang........?

Thanks Tami for the info+ about the dragon fruit.

From the cacti/succulent plant fruit, my only experience
was with the (seedy) prickly-pear, which I love to eat any time.

Here is a pic of some (white, yellow & red ones) I harvested and ate while back visitng home:

No tang that I've ever heard of or citrus either. Kind of semi firm. You scoop it out with a spoon and it's not hard to do. I would compare the hardness to a banana.

I had to start over with mine this year. As I said they are very cold sensitive, anything below 40 and they die.

I have Makisupa, Voodoo Child, Halley's Comet and one more I forgot the name of for the moment, would have to go look.

OMG that looks so delicious!

I started 2 prickly pears last year. We have new mickey mouse ears but no fruit hints yet, I can't wait.

I don't know why the fruit I love has to have the hardest seeds! Prickly Pear, Guava, Pomegranate. Does anyone do whole juice with the seeds?
