Drastic measures for cuttings

My kitchen fridge lower drawer is full of fig cuttings. I ran out of room and started adding some on the top shelf. My kept telling me I had too many cuttings. So, I went to HH Greg and bought a new refridgerator and placed it in my office. My son and I just carried it inside while the wife was sleep. She came out of the bedroom trying find out what all the noise was. She said, "What in the world are you doing?" I said, I just solved my cutttings problem! She shook her head and went back to sleep.

I've had similar issues, Dennis.   Once one crisper drawer was full of fig cuttings and other scionwood, and when I started to take over the second drawer I knew I was on thin ice... thought about buying a dorm fridge for just cuttings...Solved the problem by giving away my extras and now I have room for more!

I have a "beverage fridge" I bought a few years ago.  I guess we didn't read the specs well enough, because it only cools down to about 46 or 48 degrees.  So, I think it was more of a wine chiller/cooler than a beverage cooler.  It just doesn't get soda, juice and water cool enough.  I'm thinking of upgrading to a "real" beverage fridge....which would leave me with this other fridge for storing cuttings, also allowing me to remove them from the other fridge I keep them in.  I thin that would be what is called a Win-Win-Win scenario!!!
I haven't gone crazy on buying cuttings yet (this year), so I'm in pretty good shape fridge-wise.
Cheers,
Jim

Dennis, I love it. You're my hero!!

Wow, I was thinking some small college fridge.. but you have a full size fridge for cuttings!

Ok   I don't feel so bad now. Being a newbie I thought one crisper bin was out of control and I ran out of room to start more cuttings. It looks like this is a common practice in the fig world. I still have to go and raid another tree I found in Olympia. I only have one bin compared to a hole fridge. Happy rooting everyone.

I keep saying i need to stop trading till i root what i got. But still trading. I have a whole refrigerator just for fig cuttings. Well and beer. Lol

Thanks! Your post reminded me that I have an unused micro fridge in the garage!

Dennis,
Ha -- I just took a closer look and realized it was a full-sized fridge you were talking about.  What a hoot!
What are your plans for the freezer???  How about stocking up on Trader Joe's frozen figs?

Nice fridge Dennis! Soon you ll have enough figs to fill that baby up ! After rooting all those cuttings that take up all the space that is!lol

Dennis too late for you I know but a good solution to the storage problem is a small chest freezer then you buy one of these http://www.amazon.com/Johnson-Controls-Digital-Temperature-Controller/dp/B0064O93L8/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1422749478&sr=8-4&keywords=johnson+control+thermostat  turns the chest freezer in to a chest refrigerator.  It is digital so you can preselect whatever temperature you want.

It appears to me you should have called this subject "The ReFIGerator"

Yeap, my office is my man cave. I cook a lot and got several jars of fig jam, fig compote, fig chutney, pickles and hot sauce. My wife keeps moving my stuff out saying there isn't enough room for some things. So, now I have my own fridge with all of my stuff in my man cave.

Way to go Dennis, you are da Man! What does it feel like to be "the boss of the house". : )

That's great Dennis, I have an extra fridge  in my garage that i have been using for scionwood and stratifying seeds and so on for years.  You have made a great choice!

Your my idol....nice

Strong work! That's how things should be done.

I agree with Wills, that' s what I use.  I have two of them though one chest freezer ended up getting used as a food freezer, of all things!  I bought one large chest freezer for $100, then on the same day bought a newer medium sized one with the Johnson control already (seller had brewed beer) for $150.

I'm about to turn on my 8' x 12' walk-in cooler!  Chestnuts sold out in November and the poor thing feels neglected, I think. :)

I just bought a Bar Fridge 2 days ago measuring 36x24x22...I thought I was gone crazy.
Thanks Dennis making me feel better.

Home fridge veggie and fruit growers were taken over by the cuttings and they were slowly migrating to lower shelve. Crazy!!!

Dennis,
I love reading your posts.  You make me laugh.  I can see what is in my future.

Very cool, Dennis.  I did the same thing (bought a fridge just for cuttings) a couple of years ago.  But mine doesn't have a freezer on it, just the fridge.  I still use it just for cuttings, but now it has grape wood (cuttings) in it as well as fig cuttings.  So I guess I'm not quite as much a "purist" as you are!  Nice storytelling too.

Mike

So it seems many of us are operating botanical repositories.

This story made me realize the that fridge at my office is slowly being converted to hold cuttings and various seeds.
