Dried Fig Jelly

After running out of the Fig Jelly I made last summer, I decided I had to try to make some from store bought dried figs.

My first attempt was with dried mission figs from Whole Foods.  I cut the hard stems off, then boiled them for about 5 mins, then made jelly as I normally would.. sugar, pectin, lemon juice and a little water.  I didn't add enough water.  It came out pretty firm, not easy to spread, but was still delicious!!  (don't have any pictures)  It made 3 pint jars

Second try. I used Turkish White Figs from Whole Foods.  Boiled for about 10 to 12 minutes (I did not cut the stems off yet), until they were soft and plump.  Then I cut the stems off and quartered.  For lemon juice this time, I peeled and pureed the lemon in a blender and used pulp and all.  I diced and apple and added it too.   Added enough water this time and got a real good consistency.  I think this is my best batch yet.  Made 4 1/2 pint jars.

I didn't keep track of measurements, I'll try to nail down the recipe later.  I'm going to try the Black Mission ones again.  Can't wait for fig season to come around again.

Well done chef! Looks delicious!

Looks very good

Have you considered using the frozen Turkish figs from Trader Joe's?

Never been to Trader Joe's.  I'll try to check it out.  Do they carry them in all stores?

James, HEB has the best fig paste that I've ever had. It has the texture of hard jello. When you run out, it's worth a try.

HEB?

Fresh market has good fig jam as well.  Bonne Maman is the best I've had so far.

Try Bass's recipe but double the liquid. I use coconut water. And the toasted sesame seeds are a must! I gave my boss a jar to sample. He's from Morocco. The next day he asked to buy a case of it! He said it taste like the same jam that his Dad makes.

I would leave the mastic out - I'm not a fan of that flavor.

Calvin, HEB is a supermarket chain here in Texas.

This is my latest find and being raised eating the real stuff( momma K is an expert in cooking up preserves of any kind) I must say it is as close to home made as they come. Too bad they only had one jar left. Worth every Pennie !!

I love Bonne Maman, but I've never seen a Fig version.

Thanks!

Still much cheaper to make my own.  :)

I made another batch (eight half-pints) using the dried Mission Figs.  Absolutely Delicious!
