Dryed Figs

SW Missouri is not the meca of figs so I have a question for you all.  I finally found a health food market that has dried figs.  Other than just eating them out of the container, is there a different way to do something to them?  These were Black Mission BTW.

You can soak them in hot milk ;)

The Black Missions are usually great right out of the bag.

The dried light figs from Greece or Turkey in my area are often very hard, too dry.  But if you put several in a coffee mug, fill with water and heat in the microwave for a minute, then let stand until cool, become somewhat rehydrated.  I like to drain the water and store them in the fridge, and they seem even better then.

Ed   that is not allways true.
here are some fresh soft ones. ABCD0020.JPG

The Black Mission figs I got are firm but not dried completely.  The organic market I got these from have 3 different varieties so I will try them all.  Thanks everyone.

Hey yall. Those look really nice and very familiar Andrea. Thanks for sharing.
Ed, just like most dried fruit they can be a bit chewy, but really has to do with the drying process and variety of the fig. Some taste better dried than they do fresh and Andreas can confirm that being in fig country.
Keith. You could chop them up really small and sprinkle over your favorite salad as you would with dried cranberries, or make a nice jam or jelly,as described on a current topic. Enjoy.

ChrisK, I will give that a try tonight.  That sounds like a good idea.  Thanks.

Rehydrate and make a pie like you would if it was apples. Richie

How long would you suggest to rehydrate them Richard?

Use two to three bags dried figs 1cup sugar half stick real butter teaspoon cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg 1/8 teaspoon salt. Mix everything in sauce pan except figs. Low heat till melted. add 1/3 cup water. Bring to simmer. Add figs. Cook till tender adding water if needed after figs are tender add 1/4 cup flour simner till thickend. If it seems runny add 1/2 teaspoon corn starch. Thats it. Buy pie crust and pie top.

Thank you Richard.  I need to buy some more figs since I finally found a source here.

Add water butter first. Sorry i wrote it wrong and its 1 cup water not 1/3. everything else is correct. Remember to add more water as needed after adding figs

I like to put a few in with my microwave oatmeal.

Grate idea. Microwave them.

I use them like you do any other dried fruit. I just now searched the net with "What to do with dried figs" and found all sorts of ideas. I really liked what this web site said.

I rehydrate them by boiling for about 10 minutes or so.  Then cut the stems off and make Jelly.
